Is that straight from the manual? I put in 5 quarts with a new Toy filter and the level was too high. I called a local auto part store and they said 4.3 Quarts. I called the lexus dealer and they said 5.5 Quarts. Well if 5 Quarts is high, I can imagine that there are a lot of es300's with leaking gaskets and such from the dealer. I ended up draining out a half Quart and the level was good after that. That's why I was so curious as to what the owners manual called for.

Thanks

The dealer just changed my oil and it was over the full mark on my dipstick. I brought the car back to them and they had to drain about ½ Quart so it was right at the full mark. He told me that the car ('03ES) called for 5 quarts that are metered in by a supposedly accurate machine, so even though your car also calls for 5 quarts w/filter, I don't know why this happens.

That's kind of sad that the lexus dealer doesn't even know what the exact capacity on these cars are? Mine is just righ with 4.5 quarts so that's what I'll be putting in next time I do the change as well.

A significantly overfilled crankcase will not cause leaking gaskets so much as it could mean foaming in the crankcase. This happens when the level in the crankcase is so high that the crankshaft counterweights, when they rotate to the bottom, actually dip down into the oil level, similiar to the old splash system of many decades ago, stir up the oil, and cause foaming. While this will not wear out the engine overnight, it does lead to decreased lubrication of the bearings themselves and can shorten engine life.
If you do not have a published oil capacity and you know that the car has the correct dipstick that has not been replaced, then the best way to ensure the correct oil level is to SLOWLY refill the crankcase, quart by quart, give each quart time to settle, take a reading, stop at the full line, and then add a small amount to account for the filter capacity. Start the engine, watch for the red light to go out or the pressure gauge to come up, check for leaks, then cut the engine off, give the oil a couple minutes to settle, and take another reading. If the oil passages are not clogged up, it should be pretty close to the full mark.
Sometimes you have to look carefully, though.....clean oil can be very hard to see on the dipstick.
