All the sites across the internet will have varying info so this is something that should be considered on an individual basis. Remember this is YOUR car. Relying on us to help decide when to drain oil is pointless. That is like asking us to tell you when you become hungry or you neighbor taking a blood test to see how your white blood cell count is.

Have the oil analyzed at the interval and report back. Then you will have an answer as to how well a dino or synthetic is performing in that particular car at the given milage.



Mike, the reason it burns off easily is that it is low calories.

Adding my 5 cents, I have tried several different grades of Mobil 1 in my 99 RX, 5W-30, 10W-30, 15W-50 and now a 5W-50 (available in Mexico, not in U.S.)

I go 3,000 miles between changes (includes filter, a K&N gold). I once went 5,000 miles on a trip on 5W-30, all highway miles, and oil was slightly burned and down about 20%.

Most posters are right when they say you should be watch it with going 5,000 miles, synthetic or not, but then again it does depend on the conditions. I have a harsher environment and and am more careful.

I run Mobil 1 5W 30 & also use the Mobil 1 oil filter. I have contacted the other popular high performance synthetic companies as well (Red Line, Amsoil, Royal Purple) and have asked for performance specifications on their products so I can compare. Mobil 1 is good stuff! I also got a couple of K & N oil filters in Florida while on my honeymoon to see if I notice any difference compared to the Mobil 1 filter.

That's all it takes for a specialty oil or additive company to survive; i.e. a steady supply of young, innnocent 18-30 year olds going through that "willingness to experiment with anything" phase. These companies make a pile of $dough$ even if most of their customers try their product just once.

Specialty oils and additives remind me of weight loss products - none work, but millions of people are willing try new ones year after year, decade after decade. And the dirty old rich men who "invent" these products just laugh their heads off all the way to the bank.

I'm saying fleets of commercial vehicles like semi-trucks, taxi-cabs, FedEx, UPS., etc. don't generally use off brand specialty synthetic oils, oil additives or filters because they know these products are gimmicks and cannot really boost engine life, engine power or fuel economy.

What this boils down to is the premise that as an owner, he/she will be able to effect some change as to improve some aspect of the car. In this instance, some super fluid is going to make the car last XXX miles longer and perform XXX better. Maybe under some circumstance it may, more than likely, the long/short term effects of such will go unnoticed.

A team of engineers developed this car and the proposed schedule. On the other side, another team devised a way to gain extra $$ for those susceptible to suggestions on improving something. Whether you believe it is up to you.

The cars we drive are not lab expediments running in controlled conditions, just drive it and follow the suggested maintenance schedule. More than likely, the car will provide many years of good service.
