LX vs GX
Okay....I'm done with GM. Been burned too many times. I have a Tahoe with only 135,000 miles and it's the worst car I've ever owned.
My first choice would be a Land Cruiser....Ive wanted one forever....but they seem to be much harder to find used than the LX...so my second choice is an LX. I like the size...maybe a 2014-15. Just wondering if there are certain years to avoid? And the GX could be an option....but I'm worried about the small cargo space after being used to the Tahoe size.
Any advice on what to look for and what to avoid when buying a used LX????
Not the best time to be looking.. but my Tahoe is not going to make it much longer. I have a 2004 Lexus LS430...about 92,000 miles... nothing EVER wrong with it.
Thanks for any input

I read your post with interest. I transitioned from BMW. Good initially, not so good longer term. I was looking to purchase a new GX Luxury, but couldn’t get one. Purchased a 2019 LX…ride is excellent! It has about the same storage as an older (live axle) Tahoe.
I drove both GX and LX. LX really does have a more substantial feel, but that cannot take away from the GX merits. The GX is an excellent truck, and you would not be disappointed. It really depends on your preference, and what would be best for you.
There was (on the LX) a major design change in 2016 which changed the look, but most of the mechanical components remain unchanged. Pricing has been pretty tight all around. If you want to stay in the 40’s or 50’s I haven’t seen anything 2016 or newer that comes close.
A well maintained LX (or GX for that matter) will last many years. The GX will be easier to buy since there are many more in circulation. Best of luck to you! You won’t lose with either choice…

What year on GX are you comparing to? I had 15 GX for 5 years and recently sold it. Also purchased 17 LX 2 years ago so had a bit of time for comparison. GX was a great car and cant be beat but IMO I found LX to be on another level. Much more comfortable, quieter ride, finishes are outstanding. I’m sure 14-15 model is similar so if i can swing it, I’d stick with LX. Keep in mind MPG is much worse if that matters to you.
I test drove a 2015 gx, 2018 gx, 2020 gx and a 2013 LX570 while the gx's were very nice and incredible, the LX moons me it is such a unique experience driving it. I ended up buying the 2013 LX and dont tegret it. I have owned 5 LS430'S through the years and I have to say get a LX since you own 430, it's like a newer truck version of the 430 in my opinion.
One thing I don't understand is why the mirrors only auto fold in the Premium model on the GX. It seems like it should be standard on all 3 trim levels. Even cheap cars have automatic mirrors!!!!!!
I test drove 17 LX in Pasadena CA last week, $56k fully loaded ($96k new?) with ML audio. But it had 21 inch wheels and the ride was bumpy over rough pavement at low speeds... At normal speeds it's velvety smooth.
Man that thing was yuuuge. U-turn was surprisingly tight.

As a GX and LX owner, admittedly from different years, I actually was happy when my GX was totaled and I was able to replace it with another LX. As for the LX, if you go with a used model earlier than around 2014, you won’t have to look at an ugly and ginormous spindle grille.

I owned 2008 GX470 for close to 12yrs and then traded it in for a 2021 GX460 Luxury back in December of 2020. Drove it until this May and then traded it for a 2021 LX... While I've always had and still have great respect for GX and I loved my 2021, the LX is where the search for perfection stops. I can't think of anything else that would be "the next level" from here. Sure, there are more "dynamic" brands of SUVs out there, but they aren't for long term trouble free ownership...so I think I've arrived at the stage where I pray that this LX is trouble free so I could stay with it for at least a decade or more. If your budget allows, get an LX and you won't be looking back for a long time. I don't mind the 17+ LX grill, in fact it looks and feels better proportioned here than it did on the '21 GX... The new GX looked great and well-proportioned from certain angles, while LX looks great no matter where you look at it from.
As for the blind spot warning, I use my LX to tow a horse trailer, which creates a huge blind spot. I installed towing mirrors from ClearViewMirror. When I bought mine, they were only sold in Australia and had to be imported, but are now distributed in the US. They are a straightforward project, the instructions and video are outstanding, and they use the factory mirror mounting holes and the wiring harnesses. No drilling, no cutting wires and splicing are needed at all.The install just requires the removal of part of the inner door panels for access. They extend for trailer towing, collapse down for everyday use, and utilize the factory control for their power adjusting. A set is currently around $600.
I went this route after my wife knocked off one of he original mirrors on the garage door. The single factory mirror at the time was a $500-plus repair estimate..

I had a 2015 GX Luxury and now have a 2015 LX. As was already mentioned, the GX is awesome in its own right. The trouble free part was something foreign to me, coming from 28 years of only BMW. The LX is a completely different (from the GX) beast. So refined, significantly heavier, etc. I love them both, but wIsh I had kept my GX for modifying (in addition to getting the LX). I like to keep my cars mostly stock, but the GX has so many options for upgrading.
I now find myself looking at things like the supercharger for the LX, and front and rear bumpers, etc.
Also looking at another GX again. Ha!
It’s a sickness.
Either one is fantastic.

Insurance notified me today that they're totaling my '13 GX after it being in the shop for almost 3 months. While searching for a replacement, I found a bunch of '17 GX under $40k with 50-70k miles BUT I just found a '14 LX with a 100K miles. Gonna go look at it tomorrow. Thoughts on going with a '14 LX over a '17 GX?
