Default 2014/2015 vs. 2016/2017 Purchase Dilemma

In a market for used LX570 and would like to get ppl's opinion on a couple different options. Car will be family hauler ONLY. Will likely never see off-roading. With 3 little kids, our GX460 is running out of space so having to upgrade.

Option #1 - 2014, 2-owners, 74k miles asking $41k at non-lexus dealership. Service record looks clean but mostly done at non-lexus dealership. Overall condition ok but interior shows a good bit of scratches and small leather tear in odd places. Assuming previous owners either had little kids, pets or carry odd object. White/tan combo which i like. Drove it fine with no obvious issues to point out. Tires likely have 10k-15k miles left.

Option #2 - 2016, 2-owners, 66k miles asking $61k at lexus dealership. Certified. Service record looks clean and most of work was done at this particular lexus dealership. Have not seen it in person as car is located out of state. Grey/red combo which i also like. 2 of 4 tires replaced and car had 65k service done recently.

1. Is the generation upgrade worth $20k difference? Based on my recent research, I can't seem to find any 14/15 with less than 100k miles for no less than $38k-$39k. Obviously car looks 'outdated' but personally i don't mind it. Although car is likely 'bulletproof', i don't want to buy something with too many miles (more than 15k miles/year).

2. Anyone upgraded from 2nd to 3rd generation? Why? Mainly because of new style?

Personally i think option #2 is a better choice and seems to be a fair price for 16 model that's certified. But $60k is my top budget and not comfortable expanding that anymore.

Any thoughts?

Default Top of budget

I just bought a 2014 from a Lexus dealer, with a full Lexus service history, and to me that was worth it. It was at the the top of my budget (40k), but apart from (hopefully) minor rust on the undercarriage it’s perfect. And I was able to buy a Lexus backed warranty for $3k that goes another 36k miles. Plus, the transaction itself was much more pleasant than some of the interactions I had with other dealers. In general, it seems like Lexus dealers have the best ones on the market.

How many miles on your vehicle? Did you cross shop with the latest generation at all? Or given that your budget was at $40k, did you not even consider at all?

88k miles. Never cross-shopped the newer ones. I was actually looking at older, cheaper ones. Met some real fright pigs. Seems like $40k is a good sweet spot between depreciation and remaining life, if you find a good one. Good luck—they’re awesome and worth the effort.

I think you should ask yourself if you want the previous-gen or the current-gen. If you have the $$ that you willing to spend, go for the 2016. The tech & upgrade definitely looks is better. If you don't want to spend that amount, go for the 2014. Just make sure you will not keep thinking about the 2016+ LX if you will get the 2014.

I cross-shop the same two options when I was shopping for the LX (2014 & 2016). I went with 2014 since I didn't feel like dropping $60k while the 2014 one was $37k.

Am about to post in another thread but we traded our 16 LX with 42k miles for $55,500 here in TX several weeks ago (it promptly sold for $60k the following week). I also know new LX's had a ton of incentives in the Dec/January time frame (up to $18k off MSRP) - all that to say if you were considering $66k, go a little more and you can find one for less OR get a newer one for just a tad more $
2018 with 34k miles for $62k https://www.fletcherauto.com/used/LE...1b6e861ed4.htm
2019 L-Certified for $73k https://www.parkplacelexusplano.com/...1e914ea8d3.htm

ALL THAT SAID, my wife actually preferred the 2013 we test drove because it is a lot less money, but also way less gadgets (that could go wrong) for long term. So if it were me, buy the 14 or a pre-16 model and save some $ for a reliable vehicle.

There are some safety features on the 16+ LX’s that may be desirable to you, baboya96. They were to me although I was primarily looking for a 2 year old LX back in January of 2020. Seems like prices have gone up since then. I flew to Houston to pick up a 2018 with 19k miles for 64k. They were selling for noticeably more here in the Los Angeles area.

Wandl, that’s a good deal on that 2018 at Fletcher Auto. Around here they seem to be selling in the high 60’s.

Wandl - neither link works for me. i'm guessing those cars are sold/gone.

i've decided to go with 16/17 but option #2 isn't budging on their price. We're approximately $2500 apart (OTD) to make a deal which may not seem alot but it's considerably more than what i'm willing to spend within my budget. Going to sit on it. i've expanded my search on 16/17 without lexus certification but again can't seem to find anything lower than $57k-58k and those tend to have more mileage than i want. (more than 80k) which exceeds my 15k miles/yr threshold. Going to be tough finding one.
