Model Year Confusion
I am chasing down an integrated towbar for my vehicle but am encountering this problem all the time. Parts dealers in Australia classify their parts as being for 2009-2017 model Lexus's. Mine is most definitely a Series 3 but it also is a 2008 build. This creates an issue as parts suppliers are saying that the "2029 on" towbar does not fit my vehicle.
Common sense seems to dictate that the towbar will fit a 2008 vehicle as described.
Any learned advice re this anomaly would be sincerely appreciated.
Cheers, Rob.
Common global practice is to give a model year based on what the manufacturer says, which usually starts in August each year. In your case, hypothetically, a September 2008 built car would be a 2009 per Lexus, in Japan, in the UK, the US, or most of the rest of the world. But it would be a 2008 in Australia. Factor that in. You can use your VIN to decode the build date, you can look that up precisely.
In Australia, we officially record a car's year based solely upon it's "Compliance Plate" data. If a car is recorded as built in December 2008, it is a 2008 vehicle for all intents and purposes. There are no exceptions to that rule. Certainly many cars manufactured overseas do not get registered or sold until the following year and that has led to the fraudulent (and YES somewhat common practice) of misrepresenting and marketing or labelling such a car as a 2009 vehicle. That practice however is simply called "M.Y." meaning "Model Year". It is a scam and everyone knows about it. That aspect aside has no impact upon parts and fitment data.
Thanks Ratchy - Yes that makes sense and it is the case here as well. I am simply stumped as to why many parts manufacturers (SPECIFICALLY) seem to think that the 3rd Gen cars commenced in 2009. As far as my research suggests, the 3rd gen cars commenced being built in September 2007 (regardless of when they were delivered or sold), so my car is truly a 2008 Lexus and also an MY 2008 for arguments sake.
