Default 90K service

I have a 90K service coming up (actually 97K because last 30K service around 66K). The basic 90K service my Lexus dealer quotes at about $1500 with replacement of timing belt. Is timing belt critical for replacement at this stage if replaced at 66K? Also, additional suggested 90K service was replace water pump for another $700 or so. Is water pump replacement essential or can I skip it? I would like to save some money, but I don't want to be looking at thousands in repair bills if I skip the pump or the timing belt.

Thanks for the reply. I will try the local Toyota dealer and see what they offer.

90K svc coming up fro my 2000 LX too. How did you make out with the Toyota dealer?
Do you also have a breakup of what is absolutely essential?
Thanx in advance.

I wouldn't mess around with the timing belt change. Total engine failure is not something that a gamble is worth.

The timing belt is the one essential thing at 90K. If you could only do one thing, this is it! :-) The water pump should not cost that much...labor is only like 1/2 hr more. I'd only believe the water pump to cost $700 if they were not doing the timing belt, because they have to remove all the same stuff (radiator, belts, timing covers, timing belt) to access the water pump. That's the main point of doing the water pump at the same time as the belt (to save yourself for paying for all that labor TWICE), as the pumps typically last 120K mi. If your dealer is quoting you $1500 for the t-belt plus $700 for the water pump, they are double charging you on labor. Pull their bluff; it shouldn't cost more than 1/2 hr (1 hr, tops) extra labor (say at $90/hr) plus the price of the pump ($150-200?). I haven't done the pump on my LX yet, but the OEM reman pump for my 86 4runner was only $49 from a toyota dealer in Houston, to give you an idea. I think my local lex dealer charges $1300 for the t-belt. I got the lexus visa card since you get 1.5% of any purchase credited towards use at any lexus dealer and 5% from any lexus purchase, so it adds up fast.

PS: my local dealer recommends changing the t-belt on the V8 at 105K mi, saying the V8 is easy on the belt, but also recommends changing the V6 belt at 75K mi since the engine is harsher on it, from what they've seen here in AZ. There's one guy w/ a LX on ih8mud who pushed his belt to 200K mi. When he had it changed, the mechanic said it could have gone at any time. I'll probably do mine around 100-105Kmi since it's closer to water pump replacement than 90K.

i plan to do the pump and belt at the 90k...my warranty is up at 92k so im going to have every TSB known to lexus also done at the 90k service also. Things like the steering shudder and mirrors and also replace my "broken" starter solinoid.

As a data point.

My 99 LX470 has 130k on the OE belt and I have TRD supercharger on it. Changing it this week along with all the pulleys and water pump.
