Default Oil Problem!

The oil in my 2007 LS460 is down 3/4 of a pint in 3,700 miles. The car has 18,880 miles and this is the first time it's been down since the 5,000 mile servicing. Has any one had this happen to their 2007 LS460? I'm not sure if it's burning the oil, or if there is a leak! I'm taking the car in to the dealer on Thursday and would like some info before I go.

Thanks for your help.

June

I have an 07 with over 60k miles and it doesnt leak or burn a drop in between oi changes and I go 7500 with synth. I would suspect a leak with that low mileage. They may try and tell you that is within spec, but push them if they do to figure it out, even if you need to cover a dealer or two in the process, these vehicles are made extremely well and that is a lot of oil in a very short period of time. I would also make sure that it was not down any from the last change and that your measuring your oil while the vehicle is very level, simple but worth a double check.

agree with cmasten..

the mechanic could have put in less than the required amount of oil.. might want to top it off for now and check again.

^def top it off immediately as to not cause any damage...if there was a leak most likely you'd see drops in your garage or where its parked.

I changed my oil yesterday and was surprised to find the small o-ring missing off the filter and the plastic filter access flap in the open position. I've noticed no evidence of leaking but since the last work was performed by the Lexus dealer during the CPO process I'm not impressed with their lack of attention to "detail". Certainly bring the oil to the correct level and check the filter and drain plug for signs of leaking before assuming you are burning oil.

Default Oil Problem!

I took my LS460 in today and the service writer had it checked for leaks. He said they could not find any leaks and it was dry. He stated that the calibration on the pump which adds oil to the car, was not correct. It shorted some of the cars by a quart.
He added a quart of oil, and since it had 19,000 miles on it, he suggested when I bring it in for it's 20k service, they will check to see if any oil has been used. He said they will give me a complimentary 20k servicing the next time I bring it in, due to the inconvenience this has caused me.
I have checked under the car and there is no oil leaking on the floor. I will check the oil several times over the next 2 or 3 months to make sure it is not leaking oil.

This still doesn't explain why you didn't double check their (shotty) work after you brought in for service. You should have checked the oil after you got it back and kept on top of it, checking it once a week. This could have been corrected right after the change.

Who really has time to check their oil dipstick after servicing? I sure dont? My logic is that it is a new car hence I should not have to check fluids with the exception of my windshield washer - especially if I just took it in for servicing. These cars are built so well that they do not burn oil. In my case I only have the dealer master tech work on my cars so I know he double checks everthing bcos he knows I am extremely picky

It takes like 3 minutes to check the dip stick. If you trust everything that your mechanic does then you are just asking for trouble (point proven with the guy who started this thread). The problem is that most people can't even figure out how to open their hood......so all hope is lost in actually finding the correct stick and checking it......you may be one of these people.

More like 30 seconds: Open and lift hood, pull & wipe dipstick, insert dipstick, pull & read dipstick, insert dipstick, close hood. Feel deep sense of satisfaction for having done it yourself...

Believe me when I say I probably know more about cars than you ever will but that is not the issue here Having said that I know exactly where my dip stick is and yeah it takes 3 sec to check, but why, I trust my tech- I have a fully built 600rwhp supra in my garage that requires all the attention hence I dont need 2 garage queens. The reason I bought a brand new LS is so that I dont have to worry about these things. The point is that it is a new car and if they put less oil in it and it blows up oh well!! I only service my car at the dealer so that would be their oops! I dont stress out over that kind of stuff!

Btw do you own an LS? and if so ask how many of us have time to check our oil after every service?
