Default How much wind noise is too much?

I'm aware of the wind noise issue the earlier LS models have. But I haven't hears of that being a real problem for the 2015s and I would definitely describe the ride in my 460L overall as quiet. Certainly more quiet than the last car I had. But I would not describe it as "tomb-like" or any of the other various adjectives used by the automotive press to describe it. At freeway speeds in particular I can still hear some wind noise. Not a ton, but it isn't silent either.

I imagine this is totally normal but am at least curious as to other experiences. Is the LS really supposed to be dead-silent or is that just press hyperbole? My car is 6 years old and has 80k miles on it, so it's definitely possible that some of the rubber sealing has deteriorated. I know that's the case around the moonroof because I can see it and because it generates a lot of wind noise if I open the interior cover. But I'm not sure about the rest. I think a bit of noise may be coming from the driver's side door too. Obviously I can't ask for opinions from anyone else who can't be inside the car, but what is the overall feeling? Do you expect nearly dead-silence or is that just ridiculous?

Also, just out of curiosity, has anyone replaced the sealing around the moonroof and if so, what was the result? Thanks.

you can’t replace just the seal, at least for the 2007, can’t imagine it would be different in other years. When my seal went I bought new original Lexus glass and had it installed. It should cost 200 bucks or so.

It should be very very quiet, if the wind noise fix was performed it shouldn't have wind noise till about 105-115mph. 130+ is fairly windy however but that's normal for most cars

One of the on going issues with the LS is the possibility of wind noise. While I agree there shouldn't be any, it's been mentioned over and over as a problem. My 08 had the noise and at times it was pretty substantial. My 2014 also had some noise, but not nearly as much as the 08. I wish you luck.

When I purchase my 460L over 10 yrs ago it was extremely quiet (tomb-like) and vibration free. My passengers often commented on how quiet it was or "is the engine running". I never had a wind noise issue to this day. Lexus was on top of its game then. The other automakers have caught up and their car, trucks and SUV's are just as quiet.

Then for sure, I have an issue. My 2014 I get noticeable wind noise around 80mph, and going 90+ or so, it's fairly loud... 80-85 on the high way is fairly common.

That's just flat out false. The 460 is the second quietest car ever made as far as measurements on new cars and long term nothing stays as vibration free.

I read on these threads that if it’s the driver door you can remove the triangle piece on the door near the mirror and clean the area and re caulk or glue it back and that should eliminate the noise. Lexus have a replacement part for that one which could also help.

It’s not just the driver’s door. Either or both of the front doors can have the triangle trim problem. I follow the wind noise issue closely. I am confident in advising you that Lexus has not made a replacement part that will work better as to wind noise.

I recently got my 2007 LS 460L and I have only been in the driver seat so far. But I did read there was a replacement part somewhere for the front door, could have been an aftermarket item, not sure.

Well, a few strips of Duct tape over the trim will cure the wind noise too.

It is funny that you are mocking your own approach. With proper masking, it can be done and it is going to look as clean as original.

I did the fix with new triangle trim and seal. I couldn't tell the difference maybe because I never paid attention to how it really was prior to the fix. I also greased the door seals and window with the "Honda Grease" during my car restoration.

What I found worked for my year 2008 driver side window was to "blip" the window down and the up. When I was blipping it down only the wind noise would quiet down but when I hit a dip in the highway the window would come down a a little and making a frightening whistling air noise. When you blip it back up slight I guess it prevents the window from coming down since the window motor is driving the window upwards. Please note the wind noise was not bad for me. Sometimes I'd forget to do the window blip trick.
