Default Engine Repair/ Replacement Cost

wondering if it’s better to replace engine with a used one -1,000 plus labor, a remanufactured one for 8k plus labor or if anyone here knows how much it would be to take my old engine and rebuild it from the ground up?
Has anyone replaced their engine?
which route did you take and how much was the engine repairs and how much was the labor, and where did you have it done, and are you happy with the results?

I would find a low mile one in the junkyard and make sure to at least change the rear main seal before you have it reinstalled. I would also check the valve cover gaskets, fuel pump seals and spark plug tube seals but that's just me. No need to spend 8k for a reman unless it's on someone else's dime.

THE PAN SEALS. Never skip those of you have an engine on a stand. The upper pan is a major issue of it does decide to leak and you should take the time to replace the FIPG and I would also suggest replacing the exhaust manifold hardware and gaskets and making sure they are happy as well.

About a year ago, bought a used LS460 wig 153k on the clock from a Lexus dealership, one owner car, driven a lot from North Carolina to Houston and back, and always serviced at Lexus where I purchased it or at a North Carolina Toyota dealership, car had lots of Highway miles. After purchasing car had dealership replace 8 spark plugs and tubes, valve cover gaskets, fuel pump gaskets, 2different O2 sensors, and oil change! Everything was good! Took trips up and down the Gulf Coast. After 6 months, started having a hesitation issue at certain speeds. Went to dealership, asked to have ECU flashed, dealership said that I had bad heads and it would be 7k plus labor to repair! I had complained about hesitation issues for 3 to 4 months. I brought it to a friends place, he put OBD reader on it, said 2&4 were misfiring and 4 was really bad! He said let’s do a compression test, he takes #4 spark plug out and it was broken!!!! Yes, broken- you could shake it and it would slide back and forth- it had come loose from the threads, so intact, but you could hold it by the threads and shake it and it would move back and forth! He said, here is your hesitation issue! He tried to get #2 out, but it was so tight, that he was afraid to pull it! So brought it to dealership to show them the problem, and to inform them that #2 was put in by a 800lb gorilla! And to inform them that they failed miserably at their job, by not putting the OBD reader on the car when it was previously there, and if they had of, they, not me, would have found the hesitation issue. They said that they would replace the other 7 spark plugs as a complimentary gesture! I picked it up 2 days later and when I got home, noticed a ticking sound coming from engine bay! The following day, driving back to dealership, the ticking went to a banging and the car definitely lost power and torque! So now after having the car for more than a month, they told me that they took a bore scope and the pistons, valves and timing gear all look good, “ So it’s not their fault!” So after a long discussion, I’ve asked them to pull the engine and see what is going on. The head mechanic/ diagnostic guy seems to think it is a Rod Bearing! So, waiting some more, end of first week of 2021, and they should have some definite answers for me! Now, they aren’t going to answer/ fess up and tell me that they accidentally dropped something into the spark plug hole, causing this damage! I realize anything can happen, but it wasn’t ticking when I brought in- and only when I got home with it was it sounding horrible!

You might want to contact your friend lawyer. I don't see why you should pay anything for repairs if it was their mistake.

I hope your friend is a licensed mechanic, it will be useful if you decided to take the dealership to court.

Wow. That's an impressive amount of failure on the dealers part if this is true

Junkyard motor, there aren't a ton of them but when you find one, I'd say the 1-2k range for one of these is a great price.

Looks like a lot in Texas under 100K miles for under 1500 Dollars. I see two in Houston with about 77K miles for 800 Bucks.

Default New engine

Just replaced my motor. Blew 2 pistons on the previous one resulting in hard knocking. Took 4 weeks to get my baby back.

Looks like you have a 2007. If you go the used engine route its best to source an engine from year models 2007-2009.7, they changed the e-vvti gear and ecu after this date. You can buy a newer engine, but you will have to swap the timing chains and components to match the ECU tuning. I'm currently fixing this mistake myself after swapping a 2012 LS460 engine into a 2008 GS460.

If you go the rebuild route, you need to make sure your machinist knows how to work with open deck blocks. They are tricky to machine.

Rebuilt is the safest route to go in terms of starting off fresh and if there's an issue there should be some sort of warranty to fall back on.

So it's not possible to buy a 2013+ engine and put it in a 2007-2009 vehicle?
