Default What is Tech Stream?

Hi all,

07 460 here with now 123,000 miles, it is due for a brake system flush, last done at dealer some 60,000 miles ago
I have a very good trusted non dealer mechanic who I want to do this job, but I have read that "Tech Stream" must be used, what is this?

Is this a computer program I have to buy, my guy cannot do a brake system clean, flush without this?
Someone please educate me?
Thanks!

Techstream is toyotas / lexus diagnostic software. To do your brake flush properly your mechanic does need the software and cable. They are available on ebay. You install it on a laptop.

With that said it is possible to manually bleed the brakes. I've read people have changed the brake actuator without techstream so anything is possible. But if you get any error codes you will need techstream to clear them.

Take it to a lexus dealer or a mechanic that specializes in lexus or toyota

I took it a indy shop i use at times. They had a heck of problem getting it done. I was surprised. I asked them if they use Techstream. They said snap-on or something can do the same thing. It it took them 2 days to finish. The next time i had the dealership do it. Be warned.

Looking back Lexus charged about 140 plus tax. I had the coolant flushed same time that was about 200 plus tax.

I just had the brake fluid sucked out at each wheel and the system replenished with new fluid

this was done on my 07 with 123,000 at my independent mechanic's shop

no Tech Stream was used or needed, no error codes showed up because no air was allowed in the system

total cost was around $150

It's best to call your dealer as each dealer can charge different prices. Toyota dealers may give you a better price. Anyone can buy and use Techstream, however it is specifically for Toyota/Lexus vehicles. If you have an independent mechanic who works/specializes in Toyota/Lexus, they'd be likely to invest/commit in the software. Many cars have become computer centric even for simple stuff.
