Just HOW quiet is a Lexus Ls460?
This is a quote from a 07-07-07 post in this forum, in a thread titled LS460 Wind Noise Fix (merged threads). This comment is typical of many hundreds of post from all over the world, including the US, Europe, Middle East, Australia and others. The cabin noise or Wind Noise is the most discussed item in this forum.
Post #46 - i would love Lexus to buy back our LS.. I am willing to pay for the "usage" of the car.. for some reason, the noise @ 70~80mph is "unbearable"... drove from Vegas.. and by the time I came out of the car, my ears were numb..and this post.. it really "angers" me...
So you folks with knowledge and experience about sound, can you venture a guess as to what sound pressure this is referring to. I know that you can only guess - would it be something like 40dB or 50db or something else?

Its hard to say, there is more to it than just sound pressure, frequency and amplitude also have a role and each person has a different frequency and type of sound that bothers them. I haven't driven an LS460 with that noise issue so its hard for me to say.
Higher than 40 or 50 db. An LS460 without the issue is aboit 58-59 dB at 75 MPH. Most mainstream cars are between 62-65 dB at the same speed (my Pacifica is 63)

A significant number of the early LS460s and LS600s had the "wind noise" problem to some degree. Lexus was forced to buy back a lot of the cars through Lemon Law claims. Since they, Lexus, didn't know how to fix them they were resold "as is." I am not talking about 10 or 20, but many many more. You may claim that it was a subjective issue but it was not. Lemon Law claims are adjucated by a panel of experts and getting a claim approved is not a trivial process. You can be confident that many people who had the problem did not seek resolution but just lived with it. I am sure that some of the cars that had the problem when they were new, developed it early or even later are still in service. Lexus never offered a viable solution and eventually took the position that all cars met specifications as to wind noise.

PLEASE READ: We are offering this beautiful car because it was repurchased by LEXUS of North America due to the following minor issue:
1. Wind Noise
This is literally all that was wrong with this over $70,000 MSRP car. The vehicle was inspected by LEXUS and was found that it met manufacturers specifications. In other words, there were no real issues, the car was perfect and they repurchased the car to maintain customer loyalty.
As they often do, this was a "goodwill buyback" and an attempt to satisfy their customer. We have driven and tested this car and it drives like new with NO issues! LEXUS has provided us with a disclosure of the original complaint for you to review and sign at the time of purchase. This process does not affect the factory warranty in any way and the car has the FULL balance of the LEXUS factory warranty for 4-years / 50,000 miles. Most importantly, in addition to undergoing rigorous testing prior to being placed back into the market, the full warranty remains on this vehicle until 07/23/2011 or 50,000 miles. The car also qualifies for many of the Extended Warranties that are available on the market. These cars are the core of our business, and we feel they represent one the absolute best values in the highline car market today. Dealing exclusively with Mercedes-Benz, BMW & LEXUS Buybacks, we know the inner-workings of the program by working directly with key Manufacturer personnel and have a full understanding of their mindset regarding satisfying the customer "at all costs." It is this customer approach and true nature of the “issues” that make these cars such a great offering to potential customers like yourself. The cars are rigorously tested, as it is the goal of LEXUS to have 100% satisfaction with the new owner. You will receive an Ohio title with a "Buyback Vehicle" notation. Other states might not recognize the Lemon Law/Buyback brand, so your State title may not have this notation. Please call your local BMV (Bureau of Motor Vehicles) to confirm.
We thank you for reading this far and hope we have a chance to discuss this beautiful car and the LEXUS of North America program with you further. We will be happy to arrange any type of additional inspection of your choosing. Thanks and hope to hear from you soon!!

There was a TSB fix for the wind noise. Basically you have to rip open the door to fix it. Your fix is so much easier.
