Just HOW quiet is a Lexus Ls460?
It was, but the newer ones are on another level.
Funny story, I was on a road trip with my cousin and I kept heating this ticking, like a watch ticking. It was driving me nuts. What could it be? He has an artificial heart valve and it ticks. Thats what it was. Car has to be pretty quiet to hear somebody's heart valve ticking at 80 MPH lol

Top 5 in 2008. Not sure if LS460 on 5th spot was LWB or not. I am assuming not. Surprised to see BMW 535i ahead of LS460 but then 600HL is at the very top so Lexus still has two in top 5.

Format is: the rank, the car and noise level in decibels
at 70 mph (~112,5 km/h)
at full throttle
when idling
1. Lexus LS 600h L
58,9
66,6
38,3
Anything this Lexus does, it does it quieter than Rolls Royce Phantom. Not bad!
The only car that can possibly beat the largest hybrid is the Maybach. Edmunds InsideLine did a full test of it and... they didn’t measure noise levels!
2. Rolls Royce Phantom
59,0
67,0
40,0
The Queen Elizabeth is where she's supposed to be - at the very top of the list.
3. 2008 BMW 535i
61,2
70,7
43,1
That's a true surprise, to see this Bimmer here. But when one thinks about it for a second, it becomes somewhat logical. The 535i has a twin-turbo petrol straight six. High torque due to charging means little revs are needed to cruise what decreases the noise. And then come the turbines themselves, clogging the exhaust manifold and quieting the car even more. Excellent performance from an unsuspected contender.
4. Mercedes-Benz S550
62,0
66,0
48,0
It was certain to find this car close to the top.
5. Lexus LS 460
62,5
68,3
37,2
LS460 follows its hybrid version closely.

That data comes from Edmunds. So that LS460 had the wind noise issue. They re-tested the LS460 in 2011 and it was 58 dB at 70 MPH cruise.
I actually have a dB meter, mine registers about 58 dB at 70 MPH cruise also.

Here is another source with top 10 where it puts 2013 LS on top.
http://www.auto-decibel-db.com/Top10_Quietest.html
1 2013 Lexus LS
2 2010 Lincoln MKT
3 2012 Lexus ES
4 2016 Mercedes S
5 2014 Lexus GS
6 2014 Cadillac CTS
7 2012 Audi A8
8 2013 Acura RLX
9 2016 Mercedes E
10 2016 BMW 7
It has 2016 model year cars in it therefore I assume it at least covers model years 2013-2016.

Where do you place your meter? I usually set mine on the center console of a car and remove all interior items and close all compartments
Interesting, I never considered my 2007 LS the quietest car I'd ever driven. I certainly wasn't as quiet as my (inline six) 2001 530i. Most of the noise was low speed engine/transmission noise (groaning) - typical, nothing wrong with the car. At high speed the engine/transmission noise was masked by road noise and wind noise (particularly from the drivers window). My 2014 exchanged the drivers window noise for high pressure injector clattering but kept the engine/transmission noises. Again, only noticeable at low speeds but totally out of place in a Flagship car like the LS (IMHO)
Injector clatter does seem to be a variable between cars. My 2015 had it but my 2017 doesnt.
At speed I've never driven a car that I felt was notably quieter than the LS, and I've driven basically everything remotely comparable. I have driven cars that are as quieter, but this is certainly one of the quietest cars you can buy.

I had an ‘07 and an ‘11 and now a ‘16. The main difference is that there is no loud side-wind in the ‘16. I’m not sure if that changed in ‘13 with the refresh or not, but it’s been really nice!!!
Some 07’s unless retrofitted had non laminated side front window glass.
my 08 had laminated front side glass windows but had a rubber molding inside the passenger window that was buckled and noisy.
replaced molding. Noise gone.
most noise is from the Michelin tires on our grooved concrete freeways in so cal. On Asphalt it’s quieter.
