Default 11 mpg, 2011 ls460, really?

My driving is about 80% city, but even so, that seems way too little mpg compared to what others say they get. It shows average of only 13.4 over 26,000 miles driven so far. Lexus service rep says using "name" brand gasoline would cure the low ,mpg, but that sounds like bs to me. I did try a tank of "name" gas, saw no difference.

Update: (Initial response to comments, more to come after I study them). 11 mpg, +/- a little, is derived by manually dividing distance driven by gallons at each fill, 13.4 average for about 28,000 miles (not 26000) is from the display. I usually use the same service station. A complete tank of the top tier of a national brand didn't improve the mpg. As to filters, oil changes, etc, the car has been serviced at recommended intervals/miles. I've no idea how the air filters, or the engine itself, look, as "modern" practice is to hide the engine under a plastic cover. Lexus dealer service writer ran no O2 or any other check, just said using a name brand would fix the mpg, and 11 mpg "isn't bad." . (Says a lot about him.) I live in Southern California, so cold weather is not a factor.

You might get more feedback in the LS section, perhaps. Providing some additional info would be helpful as well. Mileage, driving style, city distance driven, maintenance performed......

My 2011 LS AWD routinely maintains approximately 21-22 mpg with a solid mixture of city and highway driving. I use Marathon gasoline 93 octane exclusively. On the highway, while driving at a clip of 75-80 mph (or more) for several hours straight, I've received upwards of 26-27 mpg. With the air conditioning on. I do have the oil changed every 3,500 to 4,500 miles. Synthetic only, Mobile One. 11 mpg! That's a little ridiculous. Have you tried calculating the mileage on paper rather than relying on the computer? Also, how do the two engine air filters look?

Thankfully, my engine purrs like a kitten! It's the only thing that I absolutely love about this car. The odometer just turned 48,000 miles. And, so far, knock wood, absolutely no oil usage between oil changes.

You might try “top tier” gas. Heavy cleaning action helped smooth my engine

Are you using good quality premium fuel? 11 does seem low. I would also calculate it yourself rather then rely on the computer.

I only use Shell. I think it’s the nitro 93 octane.

I usually get 16-17 mpg around town with some highway thrown in about two times per week.

The trip computer says i get about 20.4. Its a mix of mostly highway with some city since i basically just drive to and from work and out to lunch. I know they are not always accurate but id say 20.4 is in the ballpark of what our cars should be getting. I use Shell 93 octane.

I own a 2007 LS 460 SWB and 97% of my driving is in the city under some heavy "stop and go" traffic most of the time. The car is extremely well maintain and I currently has 81,000 miles on it. I use Mobil 93 octane gasoline and never, ever, used anything else. In spite of all that, I only get 15 MPG in the city, no more, no less On the occasion of highway travelling, I never exceeded 19 MPG. I travel about 16 miles back and forth to work, and then the usual errands out and about, like everyone else. Oil changes done every 6 months (2,500-3,000 miles), at the dealer at which point the car is also inspected for any other issues/needs (filters).

What method are you using to determine MPG? Are you getting the distance traveled from the car's odometer and fuel consumed from the fuel pump? Or are you getting MPG from the car's computer? Or are you using some other method? Are you integrating the data or does this represent single trips?

Predominately car computer based calculation(s) Mr. J M Craney. However, I've also calculated the mileage manually, (miles traveled divided by gallons of fuel consumed), and the two results, (computer vs. manual), were pretty comparable. Which is surprising really, considering what everyone else is saying that they are getting here (19.

My calculations are week to week, as I refuel weekly every Saturday. Total amount of fuel consumed vs. miles traveled.

Same here, brother! Maybe cars from warmer climates? I know mine dropped a little since last refill and it's been colder than a witch's **** here in Chicago lately.
