Pin striping
Anyone have advice on removing the painted on pin stripe from my starfire Pearl LS. Googled rendered a few diff methods, one as simple as lacquer thinner and a rag. Almost seemed too easy to be true. The stripe is above clear coat.

No way is laquer thinner going to remove cured paint.
My advice? Have the previous owner be forced to do it for you. Who the HECK puts pinstripes on a car in the last, ohhhh..25 years??? LOL
Failing that, I see careful wet-sanding in your future.

It’s more common than not for southeast Toyota and Lexus vehicles. I sold Toyota for years, almost all our cars came in with them as a dealer “add on”. I’m the second owner of this one. I don’t like them.

Years ago I bought a previously owned silver 2003 GS300 with a painted purple pin stripe on it -bought in 2006. It was a good deal and I thought no problem, I will just remove the stripe. I tried the thinner and ultimately took it to body shop to remove. They did a good job but the painted stripe did something to the clear coat under the stripe and was different visually. Like a very noticeable “phantom stripe.” I ended up putting a black vinyl srip back on the car to cover it up.

You might try an orbital buffer and some compound. Just the other day I was polishing my wife's Honda pilot and it had a scratch that went through a section of the painted pin stripe. I got the scratch out....along with some of the pin stripe as well. Use a good compound and a good pad and I bet you could take it off yourself.

Depending on what your pin stripe is made of, they sell a pin stripe removal wheel. It looks like a rubber disk that fits on your drill. Just google pin stripe removal tool and you'll see it. Confirm that yours is 100% painted on as some look it but in fact are stick on and cleared over.
