2008 LS460 Trunk won't open
A quick recommendation. Get your mobile phone out and take pictures at every step to make sure you have the steps (in reverse) for putting the liner back on. Additionally, a couple of clips (the round push-in type) broke during my removal, and not sure it was entirely "user error". I think they just get old and brittle. I asked a car mechanic why don't companies offer replacement clips that are made of silicone, nice and soft, pliable, push-in/out easily, etc. He said it's for safety reasons in case of an accident, but I think for replacements the soft type would be just fine.
I found the most difficult part was removing the liner from near the part that surrounds the mechanism. I tore the liner there during the removal, but thankfully you need to know it's there to see it. Otherwise, it's just time and effort.
Hope this is helpful.

I had this problem. But found an extremely good fix here:
Getting the key ring on was a little bit of a challenge because it was actually around the size of the inside diameter of the sensor, but once I got it on, it held quite well!

I didn't measure it and it's all back together now. But it was one of the ones that the dealer puts on your fob to attach the service tag. I can say that, without expanding it, if fit exactly on the inside of the plastic piece around which you need to wrap it. And it was a pretty good challenge stretching it open to get around the outside of the same piece. I wound up using two small screwdrivers in opposite directions (along with a liberal application of colorful language) to get it around completely. Once it was on, it was pretty snug.

I think you might have accidentally turned on the button in glove box. When you open the glove box, there is one button on the left side. If this button is pressed (turned on), you wont be able to open the trunk except with the key. This is designed that way so if you valet park your car, you can turn this on and then lock the glove box. Then you hand over the fob only to valet, not with key. That way your valuables in trunk are safe and no one can access these
Open the glove box, press that button and you would be all set..

I have replaced the latch 3 times and every time its been the plastic ring or the outer part getting brittle. Isn't there a way to purchase just the white plastic.
It seems like the plastic part wouldn't cost more that 20 or 30 bucks but the whole assembly is hundreds of dollars. I'm sure we'd all like to know where this plastic part can be purchased.

I'm experiencing a similar issue.
Trunk latch opened using the physical key in the trunk key hole after it would not respond to any other methods. Glove box switch was not activated so not the issue.
However after a couple cycles, the trunk locking meachanism won't retract into the open position so when trying to close the trunk the latch bar hits against the locking bar located on the trunk frame.
Any hints on how to manually retract the latching assembly?
I've tried using the interior trunk open lever with no success.
Appreciate any pointers.

2012 LS460. I have tried all the quick fixes I can find on this and am left with removing and repairing or replacing. What I did do in the mean time was to remove the fuse from the rear fuse panel in trunk on the Left Side the square cover. Mine is the 23rd from the bottom on left row, 30amp labeled "PTL" - power trunk latch. This allows me to close trunk manually and open with key.
Hi guys, sorry to resurrect this thread, but it's the most relevant. I had the same issue, broken position sensor, I bought a new assembly and installed it. I thought it was fixed because previously I couldn't keep the trunk closed, after I installed the new unit it used the motor to latch itself down. But now I can't even open the trunk with the key manually. Resetting the system with pulling the battery makes it so I can hear the motor again, but it just moves a little and doesn't release. I can't get it open and I can't get to the interior lever either because there's a subwoofer box blocking my access. I tried making sure the switch in the glove box was in the right position just in case. Any advice?
