Default Brakes.

How reasonable is the following quote?

$950 for rear brakes, rotors, brake wear sensors on a '10 Sport?

Fronts will need done within next 5K as well.

I would definitely check around that's very expensive.

The parts are maybe $300 if you do it yourself...figure around $60 for pads, maybe $180 for rotors and $20 for a sensor on eBay.

The entire job should take an hour, tops. So you figure a shop may charge you $100 for labor, and maybe another $20 for brake clean and brake grease. That's $420 - I wouldn't pay more than $450 for this job, certainly not $950.

Now understandably shops are going to markup the parts maybe 15%, so maybe...just maybe $500 total (but that's high).

So if I could get it down to around that price for all four corners, is that reasonable?

$950 for all four wheels isn't bad.

Shops in big cities get at least 2 hrs labor for pads and rotors, 100 to 150 per hour. $950 is the fancy building free snacks and loaner car price. Any general repair shop can throw on new pads and rotors without ripping you off for a grand. Kuni Lexus in Denver built the most beautiful building last year. It is like a 5 star Vegas casino with every crazy luxury feature you can imagine. They are great people but you dont pay for all that by pricing your service reasonable.

Apparently a big part of the cost is those damned wear sensors that are so sensitive. Was at 5/16 at last service on rears, 6/16 on fronts and apparently got down to 2/16 on rears so the sensors got "eaten".

Yeah! New rotors! This is just machining the rotors...crazy. And with those prices they have the nerve to have just started charging $5 for a loaner. Really? You need 5 more dollars?

My plan is to pick the best rotors and pads, and go ahead and have my guy replace the rotors so I'll have better rotors that won't warp as easily. May as well have him do the pads too, they don't need replaced though.

As the good folks here on the forum have already stated, although it requires a bit of legwork you can have all 4 corners done at a good brake shop for much less, especially if you bring in all the hardware. I just did this and the whole project cost me around $400, though my rotors did not need to be replaced. Here's what you need:

- centric brake hardware (amazon or ebay); might as well change it all out to prevent that clicking..
- pads, front and back (I went with OEM, found them new on Ebay); Akebono would have been less $
- the install, which cost me $100 at a very good mom and pop shop down the street from me.

I can grab all of the part numbers, but mine is a '13 AWD SWB, so I'm not sure they are the same as the LWB.

Had I opted to do the rotors along with all of the above, I'd say that I would have ended up adding another 250 or so. I may do that next year, but for now my braking is nice and smooth. When they measured my rotors, they were well within spec and showed no signs of warping.

So I think the bottom line is that you can do this for around half of what the dealer is asking, even less if you do the install yourself. Either way, good luck!

That's a nice chunk of change you can easily avoid spending, and I'm sure you will

Was wondering.. Do you notice in symptoms related to the warping? Pulsations when braking or anything else?

SWB Sport model.

If they come back with something closer to $950 for all 4 corners with new rotors I may go for it since they already have the car.
