Default Back up camera glitch

Two random times I put the car in reverse and the back up camera showed a blank black screen. I have to turn the car off and restart It for it to work. Any clues?

Every time? OR Just once in a while?
My first thoughts are a "possible" poor/loose connection near the camera....... Locate the connector make sure it is clean then re-seat it.

I can tell you a similar story with my 2005 LS 430 which I bought as CPO in 2008. Within couple of months of my purchase, I had similar issue that camera would go black some times. Took it to dealership in Richmond, VA and they changed the camera under warranty. Told me that cost was $1300 but Lexus took care of it. This did not solve the problem so I was back at the dealership within couple of weeks. This time they changed the computer which controls the camera. Told me again that it was $1700 fix, but was covered under warranty. This still did not fix the issue. So on the third attempt they kept the vehicle for five days and when I finally picked the vehicle, I asked them what was actually wrong with the vehicle. I was told there was a loose connector behind the head unit which randomly would work most of the times and on some occasions would show bad connection and hence black screen. I drove that vehicle for 6 1/2 more years (200K plus miles) after this, never had an issue again.

I certainly believe that there is a loose connection somewhere. Finding that loose connection might be the most difficult part. Once found, fix is very simple then.

Good info. Thank you. I'm going to see how often this is going to happen first till I pull the head unit. Maybe I will check the camera connections in the trunk.

Start at the camera (trunk connector) and work your way to the head checking for loose//poor connections........ I do a lot of work on pinball machines and most of the time unplugging and then plugging the connector back in (reseating) fixes the problems most of the time.
If this only happens 2 times in 5 months I would not be "too concerned" about it until it gets worse........ Like 2 times every two weeks.

If you can't fix it with a hammer........ It's an electrical problem!!

I believe there has been issues with Lexus's touch screens in some other models, it's a loose connection/poor soldering. I forget who makes the screens...Toshiba? But there is a thread somewhere on this site about how to repair them yourself. Perhaps the problem is associated with the LS too, but I haven't seen much. My screen went blank on me once...just stopped working...shut the car off and turned it back on and it was fine. That happened a year ago...hasn't happened since.

Did you have any luck solving this? I have the same issue as well. I didn't think it was a loose connection because restarting the car typically fixed it (until the next failure incident...)

Yes I had great success by unplugging the camera pigtail in the back. I just put a drop of WD40 in the connection and plugged and un plugged it a couple times. The camera hasn't given me any problems since. I don't know for sure if this was the fix but it's been working perfect for a couple years now.

Maybe next time it happens give the Navi frame a swift bang... just to see if that gets it working again. If it does, it's behind the navi screen...

Thank you! How did you access that connector?

Kenny, two points. One, amazing you saw and responded to a thread over two years old!

And secondly, I love WD40, but I would have thought a grizzled old timer like you would have used Marvel Mystery Oil like would have done!
