Ive searched for the past two days for some good directions on waterpump replacement. I just brought my car in for the Fuel recall and they said I had some coolant leaking out of the sepage hole of the waterpump?(I got a full tank of gas by the way service advisor said it was mandatory by corporate for our troubles) The service advisor said it was fine and didnt pressure me to get it replaced. Has anyone experienced this on the LS? My car just hit 100k. Ive heard that it can cause problems with timing. Is that just the older models with a timing belt? I had my ls430 and drove it to 165k and had no issues with the water pump. She still looks pretty as ever. I took this shot the other day, gotta love those lines!

It is not connected to the timing chain, and is very easy to replace as it is right at the front of the engine, driven by the accessory drive belt.

I'm speaking about Road Frog.
He's replaced his water pump to the tune of $55 if I'm not mistaken.
I'm sure he'll have no problem speaking to you about it, as he's stated several times that it was a pretty easy DIY project.

I did this job back in September. It's simple:

1. After you get all the engine covers off and drain the coolant, you want to remove the coolant reservoir tank.

2. Remove the air inlets.

3. Remove the serpentine belt

4. Disconnect the dipstick tube. You aren't removing it, you're just moving it aside.

5. Remove the water pump pulley.....YOU DON'T NEED a special tool (SST), mine removed easily with just a socket and a pry bar or screwdriver to hold the pulley in place.

6. Remove the water pump. When you replace the pump, I would make sure you torque the bolts all in proper sequence. All the bolts have different torque specs. Lots of diagrams on google that will tell you the specs and sequence.

I also replaced all my hoses and all told, I think it took me about 2 hours (including refilling the coolant and purging the air), and cost me 75 dollars for the pump and hoses.

MAKE SURE YOU USE TOYOTA COOLANT. Or, you can also use Zerex Asian Formula coolant that you can find anywhere. But FWIW, Toyota coolant was only a dollar more per jug, so why bother?

Water pump replacement/failure at 100k miles is pretty standard. You didn't experience any water pump problems with your LS430 because it has a timing belt and the water pump is replaced with the timing belt when it is serviced (somewhere around 100k miles). The timing belt service on a LS430 is generally $1200 dollars at a dealer...maybe 400 dollars less at an independent shop.

It's funny that my Lexus dealer in Cerritos, California also recommended a water pump and drive belt replacement for close to $900. This is when I went in for the fuel pressure sensor leak recall.

Roadfrog: Where did you get the water pump for so cheap? LexusDirect on Amazon has it for $165 plus $44 for the belt.

The Aisin one also has a one year warranty vs the 60 day of the other listing. I tend to go with the units that have better warranty's. Also, keep in mind that most of these units are reman and therefore can be Asin, or anything else "built to meet or exceed OEM". Don't go by the pics.

Thanks for the info. On my Toyota Landcruiser, I always got Toyota belts. Aftermarket betls made a whining noise. Is this also a problem on the LS460? Or I can use an aftermarket belt with no issue?

Toyota doesn't make their own belts. Most OEM are manufactured by Bando. Regardless, my replacement makes zero noise. I have heard however, that the Gatorbacks (Goodyear) have been known to make noise.
