Hey gents,

So I'm just under 36k on my 2013 LS460 and I get a call from EasyCare flogging their warranty. The salesguy knew the name of my Lexus service advisor and urged me to contact him for a glowing recommendation of the EasyCare product - hmm.

At any rate, the deal is that EasyCare products go up in price after 36k miles (no diff from 36k + 1mile up to 50k miles) and they stop offering ALL 6 year coverage as well as ALL 120k mile coverage once I go over 36k. I'm not sure what Lexus factory warranty products are available although I believe EVERYTHING is available at any point up to and including 4 year/50k miles. In general, I would want to buy the $0 deductible, bumper-to-bumper, everything covered, maximum term (years), maximum mileage (120k?) warranty available PROVIDED it is both transferable to subsequent owners AND pro-rata refundable to me if the subsequent owner does not want the coverage.

So what do you guys think? I know Lexus factory has tightened up on factory warranty products available over the internet as of late. Is EasyCare a worthwhile product? Should I play the game to secure an out-of-state Lexus warranty? Should I just go ahead and pay the man at my local dealership? Any thoughts?

 

What do I think? RUN!!! 3rd party warranties are notorious for not paying up and then going belly-up, leaving you holding......nothing. Get a manufacturer's extended warranty. You can still get them from out of state sellers if your car is still under the original factory warranty (they just can't be advertised on the internet like they used to). Check with your local Lexus dealership finance manager and see if he can match the out-of-state prices..

 

No way I would ever purchase a third party warranty. So many people have been left screwed by these things.

Get the Lexus extended warranty, but wait until you get to the end of the manufacturer's warranty...

 

I would avoid third party warranties in general. However, I do recall several members here saying that third party warranties purchased through their credit unions were good.

Coincidently, just recently the TV program American Greed on CNBC did a show on two brothers who started US Fidelis. This was a third party auto warranty firm that defrauded people out of ten of millions of dollars. They are both serving time right now. One of the brothers built a 30 million dollar mansion. Now he's in the big house, but not the one he built!

I bought the Lexus warranty myself.

 

AS others stated here....avoid like the plague.

 

I wish automobile warranty companies would actually assess actual reliability facts when determining rates like they do for other assets.
As it stands now all cars with preexisting conditions get a free pass.

I thought the whole point of a Lexus was reliability and avoiding the ruinous repair claims the German marques suffer.

 

Exactly...That's why I got rid of my Mercedes CL500 for my 460.

 

It is, but with all the technology and expensive parts on one of these cars, I would consider an extended warranty too.

Even the most reliable machines suffer failures.

 

And why I happily and eagerly rid myself of my 7 series BMW.

 

I extended my CPO (should be same coverage) warranty out and it paid for itself once already for simple items like the ML amp and sub and one window motor.

 

My experience with BMW and Lexus vehicles over the last 25 years is that they are equally reliable (Consumer Reports notwithstanding) and equally expensive to maintain and repair. I didn't buy an extended warranty for my 1992 525i or my 2001 530i but I did buy one for my 2007 LS460. Make of that what you will.

 

A gentlemen who owned an 07 LS460 came into the dealership after a certain unnamed independent shop serviced the brakes and brake fluid. They had somehow got air into the system and the brakes went into fail safe. he drove it anyway with the alarm beeping and overheated the accumulator and blew both abs fuses when the pump motor locked and shorted to itself. He took it back to the shop and they claimed to have reset the skid control ecu, but it didn't clear the code or alarm. In fact they had did it wrong too and fried the ecu.... MEANWHILE the same day another LS460 was towed in after another independent brake slaughter- I mean service with the same symptoms, However only the accumulator was found faulty. ( they had Lexus extended warranty - it was covered. ~$2300) Other guy did NOT have one and was on the hook for accumulator, accumulator pump, fuses, diag, and labor. ouch.....He is currently fighting the independent shop to pay for the $5000+ repair.

In my experience working on luxury cars. Never own one (ANY BRAND BMW, MERCEDES, FERRARI, LEXUS, TESLA,) without a warranty. Unless you have the coin to maintain them.

... The brake system alone (at least the accumulator and pump portion) on the LS460 is the same used on the LFA... these aren't camrys. A Camry can't anticipate your pedal pressure needed in an emergency stop or have the brake hold feature.

As with any luxury car there aren't as many therefore there aren't as many aftermarket parts companies to compete with luxury brands for integral components. That is what drives prices up as well.

 

I've never had a BMW, but based on the experiences of my many friends and colleagues that have them...I cannot agree with that statement at all.
