I got my brakes changed at 55k maintenance at my independent Lexus shop I go to. Around the time I went back for my 60k, I started hearing a loud squeal. When I took it in for my 60k, I told them about it and they resurfaced my rotors. Now its worse. I'm planning on taking it back to them but would like to know what to say in case they just tell me I'm ***** out of luck. I'm pretty clueless about brakes so not sure why its squealing.

 

Need a little more information to properly Internet diagnose the problem.
What rotors are on the car?
Stock?
New stock?
Aftermarket?
How many times have they been resurfaced?
Type of pads?
Did they use an anti squeel material between the pads and pistons?
Were the pins and clips lubed properly?


I have taken apart my brakes on the wifes old corvette after having new brakes put on by a reputable shop only to find that the parts were not lubed correctly and they never used anti squeel...
The response from the shop was that stuff never works.

I lubed them and used anti squeel upon re-assembly and they never squeeled again.

Makes you wonder who teaches these young techs anyways...LOL

 

They have been resurfaced twice. Once when I took it in to get it changed, then again when I told them about the noise. Every thing on my car is stock. I'm not entirely sure if they use OEM brake pads or not. I can't tell you anything else because I'm not sure what they did besides swap out the pads and resurface the rotors.

 

Someone here may correct me, but I highly doubt that the rotors were the cause of the squeal, especially since they are OEM. Almost certainly it is the pads causing it.

As an aside, now that your rotors have been turned twice, you can't have that done again, you will have to replace them.

 

Pads are the likely culprit...

If you're not sure what they did or changed, I would replace the clips, etc. and make sure the appropriate areas are lubed with anti-squeal. There's also an oem shim kit that might be good to install since you're going in there anyway

 

Ok just for being technical we use brake grease on contact points where the brake pads slide on the housings. Where the piston makes contact we use the anti squeak. Actually cover the backside of the pads with a thin layer of anti squeak and you are good to go from dust and vibration. Clips should have just a touch of brake grease...
Been doing it this way for 35 years and have never had a ride that squeeked to a stop..

Never thought about being an expert but his brings up a good point. If you have any concerns or you are not familiar with brakes and or not comfortable with working on or around cars. Leave it to an expert.
I cannot guarantee anything that you touch on your own vehicle and suggest you have a properly trained and licensed mechanic work on your braking system.

When you do have them work on the car ask them if they used brake grease at all contact points and if anti-squeak was used...

There are 2 shims on each pad.
Apply disc brake grease to the back side of the brake pad and # 1 anti-squeal shims that contact the disc brake
pad.
Install the #1 and #2 anti-squeal shims to each pad.
NOTE: Do not apply grease to the sides of the #2 shim to #1 anti-squeal shims that
contact the #2 anti-squeal shims.
If that still give you noise, try to replace pin hold clip and anti rattle springs.

 

Thanks for the tips. Since I never worked on a car before, I'm going to try and take it back in and ask them to apply grease/anti squeal.

 

I noticed another issue but didn't want to start a new thread. I noticed theres a clicking noise coming from my driver side front wheel or brake. Then it clicks again when I start going.

If you listen to the 4 (when I stop) and 11 (when I go) second mark, you can hear both clicks.
