So is the starter covered under the extended warranty?

 

If the extended warranty from the manufacture that covers the powertrain usually does unless it's written as a specific exclusion. In general depending on the warrantee they may not cover wearable items. Some cover alternators and some don't but most will not cover the rubber serpentine belt.

Some third party warranties are so terrible that it makes you wonder if they cover anything at all.

 

At least the starter on an LS 460 is not under the intake manifold.

 

Yes, I was referring to the Lexus platinum extended warranty.

 

You should go over your warranty before you purchase it to look for exclusions always. Ask questions and understand what they are selling you. BMW CPO warranties are very tricky on what they cover and don't cover. The Lexus CPO on the other hand is quiet comprehensive.
I imagine that a Platinum warranty includes all of the components of the drivetrain including the starter.

 

I had to have my starter replaced at 62000 miles & it was about 2300 by the time they added a few extras. My car had a catastrophic engine failure from faulty cracked valves ( a recall). Actually, the car wouldn't start when they got in it to drive it around for me to pick up after them having it for 3 weeks replacing cylinders & an engine block. I paid it because I was grateful I hadn't had the $20k plus bill on the engine they coveted. But, I felt it had t be connected somehow- the timing. Good luck.

 

I had my 2008 LS460 in for a recall last year. Mechanic caused a solenoid problem and owned it on a later repair. Fortunate and grateful for Lexus Clear Lake's great Services Manager Dennis Dunford. Seems my starter died today-my battery is good but only a click on the push of ignition occur. maybe its just 129k miles and enough 10 start days to wear it out. Along with the constant premature death of the Lexus battery.
Dealer quoted around $1200 on the phone. Local Lexus repair quoted $1900 and two good mechanics shops quote $900 each. Its a lot of work to get in and out. $1900 is probably what its really worth in work product but this very competitive market of good mechanics keeps us rolling. Could it just be the switch?

That and an independent, shouldn't cost more than a few hundred dollars. Some here at CL have DIY'd this job in a few hours.

 

Also had mine go out at about 58k miles. I think the dealer quoted around $1900.

I don't think the LS 600hL has a starter, it use one of the electric motor to start the engine. Then again when the electric motor wear out, it will need to be replace. Don't know where it is yet.

 

Repl. mine in Nov 15 @ 95k miles to the tune of $250 bucks for the starter and $20 bucks for a torque wrench and 6 hours of my time, a lot of that being to stop and answer the neighbors little girls questions about why my front wheels were missing and all the parts laying around in my driveway! Ha ha.

The job was relentless but not difficult considering I am the extended warranty!
