i always leave it on and i notice not too much of a difference most of the time. especially when i hit the pedal to accelerate fast. i assume it would kick in and thrust me forward.
but sometimes out of knowwhere i can feel a huge surge just by pushing the pedal even just a little quickly. as if im in a lower gear. i beleive at that moment the ect power is working.
it seems to me that something is off. if i leave on th ect power its so i can accelerate quick whenever i want. instead of suing the tiptronic manually etc.
I believe ECT does NOT enable you to accelerate faster, but just keep the transmission in gear for a longer time (higher revs) until it shifts gear.
In other words, if you "floor it," the transmission will down shift and stay in that gear longer till it automatically upshifts at a higher RPM than with ECT off.
If you need faster acceleration in an emergency situation, you can shift to the lower gear you want in "S" drive and also leave the ECT "on."
It takes some practice, 'case if you're cruising down the highway and want to "kick it,"
if you just switch the gear shift to "S" you may only drop down to 6th or 4th gear. To "punch it," you would need to shift to "S" and quickly pull the shifter back (downshift) several times (till it beeps) to get you in the lowest gear the car computer (ECU) will allow. This will minimize hesitation and increase acceleration as high as possible.
Remember, the LS is a full size sedan, not a sports car -- but operating like this lets you maximize the LS's performance.
If I'm in a sporty mood, I sometimes just leave the shifter in "S" all the time with the ECT on and drive it as a stick shift.
Take a 600 out for a spin - you'll be able to tell the difference there. Like some others, the change was not that apparent for me on the 460. The 600 on the other hand brings the two 40hp "instant torque" DC motors online, and combined with the ECVT, the 600 will pin your ears to the headrests (better than a turbocharger). It also makes a significant difference when you pull back on the accelerator, as the DC motors then act as re-generative brakes slowing the car down quickly and smoothly.
i just know that sometimes i know for sure the ect is on bc i feel it revving higher and more thrust. but most of the time i dont feel the difference. i think something is up with the computer has an issue. supposedly they reset the transmission memory once for a hesitation issue but want to know what else it could be?
i like the ect bc its more sportier feel and when i hit the gas i feel it more powerful longer in the gears.
but it isnt like that all the time. very rarely i notice that difference of the staying longer in each gear. its as if i do something very specificat the right time, it then kicks in to the ect power.
after playing around with the ect setting and using the S shift on the drive home today - I found it fun, but eventually realized that the LS 460 is really not meant for sports performance.
I don't know this for sure...just heard from other owners the ECT may advance the timing slightly and keep the injectors open a tad longer in connection with raising the shift points. I guess the reason for this not being on all the time is fuel mileage.
When I need the car to haul butt I push the ECT switch and the FIRM SUSPENSION switch and the car transforms to my M 7 :~).
