Exploded Views (diagrams of the LS)
Are there such things? I would like to see what lies beneath the sheet metal & plastic of our machines.

Maybe like a cutaway diagram showing how the car is put together---'expoded' view would spread the parts out like peeling an onion.
There might be some elements of that on Lexus.jp but I haven't found one yet. There are cutaway views of the cars---there is one for the LS 400 IIRC in The Lexus Story, and at least one Visual Encyclopedia uses the LS 430 as the example car for its cutaway view. I found a 2IS cutaway diagram which is attached here.
Also here is a cutaway diagram of the UR-FSE engine found in the LS 460:

And the cutaway of the IS:

No problem, Sulls! Welcome to CL btw and congrats on your Smoky Granite LS 460!
Anyhow, these two images come from perhaps the most comprehensive LS 460 design/engineering booklet I've seen, the Global LS 460 Dynamic Press Launch brochure. It's 102 pages long, and includes significant technical information and some diagrams...I haven't had time to read it all. It was previously available at the Lexus UK site, I can't find the link right now, but I uploaded it (2 MB) for download here if you like:

The diagrams aren't very high-res, but there are a lot of details and the above engine picture is there along with some additional text. Mind you, this is for the Europe-spec version of the LS 460, so some details/features will be different.

Friction my man, it's all about friction - which produces heat, the arch-enemy of efficiency. All those gears meshing together, those bearings rolling in their cages, restricted fluid flows, and the resultant heat production all contribute to suppress motive forces.

I never took friction into account. I figured there would only be minimal energy lost to friction once the gears were rolling but I guess I was wrong. LS has 317 wheel hp so its about 17% in hp loss, thats less than most other engines out. I know my maxima has +- 25% loss in wheel hp.

Here are some higher-res pics I found:
There are larger versions + several more in my photo gallery:

You're welcome, I hope it was useful!
Actually I wish there were even more technical bits out there. If I could read Lexus.jp in Japanese it would probably be quite informative, and naturally they have to keep a number of the technical details secret, given the top-tech nature of the flagship class.
