Default Occasional Noisy Telescoping Steering Wheel

I’ve noticed a couple of times, the steering wheel makes a louder than normal growling noise when it telescopes forward. It doesn’t do it all the time. I was going to possibly grease the mechanism. How do I get to it removing the bottom column shroud? There’s an easy to remove panel on the bottom that houses the OBD port. I don’t want to randomly start prying on stuff.

Hope it’s not a broken tooth on a gear in the column. I read these things are almost $2k. Since it doesn’t aways do it, I’m thinking it just needs grease. I also try my best to remember to not brace myself against the steering wheel while it’s still retracting as I exit the car. I do brace myself against it when I get out since there’s nothing else really to grab. I’ve ran it back and forth a few times to “exercise it” to see if there’s any drying grease that needs to just be worked in better.

I had occasional noise from the steering column, after lubricating the mechanism with silicon grease, the noise went away.

If I remember correctly, you need to retract the wheel all the way up then it is possible to remove the lower panel of the steering column.

The lower dash panel looks like it needs to come down. I saw a YouTube video of a guy removing a dash of an 07-12 model, and it looks like there’s a screw under a cover just below the parking brake button and maybe one on the left around where the buttons are for the heated steering wheel, parking sensors, etc. I don’t want to break anything.

I can’t stand not having a shop manual….an actual huge book like I’ve had for my other cars and not an insanely expensive online paid version with an expiration date. I need to figure out the best way to buy the 2-3 day subscription and download the whole thing to my Google drive. I’m not one to ever run to the shop for every minor thing, but I need a manual.

I'm not sure if this is possible but in the link@sha4000 says he bought a 2 day subscription and downloaded pdf manuals for his car, I don't know if he already had TS lite or not but he didn't mention that. Toyota will have multiple manuals for models like body electrical/wiring diagrams/engine bla bla bla so lots of printing for a complete set.

Can't hurt to shoot him a pm and ask. https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls-...ce-manual.html

This was years ago and I bought the 2 day subscription to download everything for my LS. I did not have lite at the time. that was 2 full days of printing non stop. I did it on my days off.

As old and as slow as my printer is, it doesn't sound feasible. Not a good idea to try that at the office on my lighting fast computer and printer. I read that you just download them into pdf's but there's a trick to it, and it's divided into sections with a tree-like structure. I found it doing a search. I might just do a little at a time. I always keep factory shop manuals, but with Lexus, it's not feasible unless you spend a fortune or go through what you did. I'm the type that can do quite a bit, but I need exact instructions. Usually I just take it to a shop now vs deal with the headaches and problems of DIY work.

The methods should be the same though the parts not so much. If the timed link doesn't work just fast forward to 28:30.
