Test Drove a 2017
Obviously it's subjective, but at least the top half matches the lower the lower half in the F-Sport where there are only 2 patterns rather than 3, where it becomes disjointed/convoluted. For me, half spindle is half a$$ed compared to full on. I think they just thought they would make up for it in the 2018+ model, where I believe they failed in your estimation.

The GS and ES in 2013 were the same design with the bumper bar in the middle.
The full spindle grill looks too much like a Camry to me. The half spindle grill, although not my favorite, does look a lot better.
Lexus went too aggressive on their styling the last several years that isn’t cohesive at all. I think true luxury sedans should be more elegant and bold looking, rather than rakish, with harsh crazy lines all over the place. You can have conservative styling with very bold looks, the Rolls Royce Phantom pulls this off perfectly well. Or even the new Genesis G90 looks so much more elegant and classy than the LS500.

If I could add my 2¢ I would not let the air suspension be a deal breaker if a car didn't have it, and you might even want to skip that feature. My 2017 doesn't have it, not sure if I would have bought it if it did, because I have heard the repair cost for it is shockingly expensive. A lot of people take one look at the cost when their air suspension blows out, and decide to simply delete the feature instead, and buy one of the "conversion kits" that include new struts, that you can get for around $200.

Concur, I bought my 2017 in spite of that ugly abomination on the front of the car. I've never heard anybody who likes that hideous grill design, but I have heard plenty of people that decided they hate the sight of it. I really have to wonder what the stylists at Lexus were thinking when they made that. The only thing worse is the design of the LS460 post 2018 - I bought a 2017 because it was the last year for that body style. The new styling is not completely awful but to me it just makes the car look cheap and flimsy. Whereas the previous style was a good solid shape with enough curves in the right places. Even if it is a bit boxy, the styling is complemented by most of the paint colors they offered it in whereas the newer ones are not, at least to my eye.
