Battery tray / battery hold down issue. 2006 Ls430 ML. Anyone else? Solution?
I removed my battery once to charge it, and then again later for replacement. I noticed that the 'battery hold down bolt' which is closer to the front of the car has an issue. It will not tighten firmly against the battery. It seems there is nothing for the hook at the bottom of the bolt to grab onto. I can't figure out if the tray is broken or what. I have looked at diagrams of the tray and bolt and don't see what might be the problem.
I guess my next step will be to go to the stealership parts department and look at a new tray, a new bolt, and see if I can see if I can see how it goes together.
I'll try to see if I see a difference between the new one and the one on my car. Hopefully the parts guy can shed some light, some expertise.
If anyone has observed this issue, and noticed a loose 'hold down bolt' closest to the front of the car, please let me know. Naturally I'd also love to read about a solution as well.
Mine is the same. I bought another battery tray from eBay and that one broke too as soon as I tightened the bolt.
I currently have my battery held down with a strap but I have fabricated a bracket for the tray so I can use the original brackets.
Hopefully it will work. The battery tray is a crap design.
The front hook (closer to front of car) does not hook into the battery tray. When installing this hook, the hook must face forward. It then must be inserter into a hole that is drilled into the metal structure ahead of the tray. It can hardly be seen but you can tell when it is properly inserted. You can then tighten it as much as you want. The tray is not at fault. If you did manage to hook it into the tray, the battery would not be secured in place, only attached to the tray. Hope this helps.

Thanks Jay, I didn't know that, and neither did the previous owner of my LS430.
I'll have a look at it tomorrow and see if I can see what it hooks to and take some photos, if my back will let me.
The tray is bolted to the car with 2 decent sized bolts and some big penny washers so the battery is currently very secure.
My corner mechanic, who is also a good friend of mine fixed my problem by hooking my battery hold down bolt into the hole in the metal, NOT the battery tray.
As was posted above, this metal hole is right beside the battery. The hook at the bottom of the bolt faces the front of the car and there is a hole in that metal.
Yes, the picture which was posted above tells the tale and is my solution.
I thought I was going to have to fabricate a solution for this, and I was prepared to do so.
But... All fixed now.
I wonder if there is any mention of this in the owner's manual.
