Default GPS upgrade.

I have driven an LS430 for the past ten years. I just purchase an 03 LS430 with 37,000 miles on it. The 03 GPS is quite different to the 06. What is the best upgrade my 2003 LS430 will accept?

It's just the nature of this Nav unit-it's pretty awful. There's been a lot of discussion on this forum regarding the Navigation in the LS 430, almost all of it very negative. If you just need a map update, they can be purchased from a variety of sources including dealers, Ebay etc. The directions for installation are in your manual.

purchase one of the new Android head units (search AliBaba) or use Grom VLine2 - both will allow you to connect your phone via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and use maps that way. Any nav upgrade to the original nav is pointless.

Android head unit will require wiring a new backup camera, but typically has a larger, better screen and faster operating system

Grom VLine2 allows you to retain stock everything, but you would still be using the old screen

The GPS in the 2003 LS430 works ok until I get to within a half a mile or so from the destination. At that point it states street by street turns are not available and you must use the directional arrow to find the destination, which is a pain in the *** when in the city. I do not use my phone at all over the car audio. I use the GPS to find houses as I am a door to door salesman.

I've really enjoyed my Grom VL2 in my 04. Purchased it in a GroupBuy via the LS430 Facebook group. Install was pretty straightforward, and I am using the CarPlay integration with WAZE to the fullest.

I trust the built in SatNav so much that I use a TomTom instead, and mine is a facelift with the latest DVD (2018).

This thread may help. It looks like you will need to replace the Nav unit in the trunk with the Gen4 unit and disk.
