Brake cable rattle 2005 LS430
I hear a rattle coming from the center console. Mostly when I close a door and when I go over a bump. I removed the center console bin then duplicated the noise by slamming the drivers door. I hear it in the base of the console cavity. If I press the emergency brake pedal just half way down the noise stops. So I am quite sure it is the brake cable resonating against some metal on the underside of the console box. My question is does the cable ride inside the “hump” in the center of the cars underside? Is it exposed? I slid my movie camera under the car and tried to capture it but with no luck. So I assume it is enclosed somehow. I want to insulate the area that it hits to stop the annoying rattle.
Try wedging a bit of foam, folded paper, cardboard, whatever to hold up the loose part of the cable temporarily, see if that fixes it. As a more permanent fix, try putting some weatherstripping tape (or similar) under it. I think the cable is inside the cabin, but I might be wrong; if it's actually on the outside, you might use a dab of silicone to hold it up.
Thanks for the suggestions. When I took the console box out from between the seats I was looking at sheet metal. that leads me to think that the cable is under the car or in an enclosure. i stuck a movie camera and videoed the underside of that area and see what looks like a heat shield. i filled the console box with a bath towel and that does muffle the noise somewhat. If i depress the parking brake one notch the rattle stops. if i can adjust the parking brake a little that might fix it. i'm researching how to adjust the parking brake.
The repair manual has some diagrams of the parking brake cable, I attached that to this reply. It looks like there are two separate cables, one for the pedal and one for the release handle.
If the parking brake still engages correctly, you shouldn't need to adjust it. If you *do* need to adjust it, the repair manual covers that. I attached that too if you need it.

tyttuut, thanks very much for the repair instructions and diagrams. From what you sent it looks like the cables are in fact between the heat shield over the exhaust pipe and the car body. So since i have a mechanic looking at the suspension bushings Ill have him check this out while the car is on the lift.
Yesterday my mechanic had the car up on the lift looking for my mysterious rattle. He didn't think it was the break cable but a loose heat shield. He took the heat shield off that is between the front wheels in the center of the car and this item fell to the floor. Its a cover of sorts part number 53747-50010 called a "Right Air Seal". He didn't know where to reinstall it as nothing was visible. Does anyone know what its for and where it goes?

I had a local Japanese car mechanic put the car up on the lift today. He took the heat shield off over the drive shaft (under the center console) and this exposed the parking brake linkage. Their is a slot that the linkage slides in. The mechanic said the slot was wider than it should have been. He tapped on it until the gap was just wide enough for the mechanism to slide but not binding. He loaded on some high temp grease and put back the heat shield.
i took for a test drive over a bumpy road and heard nothing but silence!
The mechanic told me that LS430's are noted for damage to parking brake assembly due to depressing the parking brake peddle with too much force. He thinks that this action could have caused the slot to widen and in turn cause the rattle.
This may or may not be the cause but at any rate I'm satisfied.

Thanks!
I never found the location of this cover. I will take a look in the service manuals and see if I can’t find any more info. Might take me a day or two.

thanks a lot, and really appreciate that! I’ll also double check it in workshop manual and see if there are any info about that!
