Wanted to post up some pics on my 05 UL I bought 2 years ago. Finally had a chance this spring to complete a long list or do’s being we’re home with this pandemic.
i’m the third owner. Bought it sight unseen through eBay in Nevada and shipped it across the country to upstate New York. Has not given me any issues for the last 2 years. Dealer maintained most of its life including now.
the factory air ride with 143k was just replaced by myself. Amazingly It was original 4 air ride struts, the back was starting to get a little bouncy and is why I replaced it. I put in KYB’s and RSR down dropping springs (1.5 inch drop). Replaced the factory 18 inch 5 spoked with 19 inch Roderick RW3’s running 235/35 on the front and 245/35 on the rear. I didnt want super slammed as i wanted the functionality of the suspension and not in it for looking cool but not able to drive normal.
looking to address shed chrome trim on the bumpers next 2 weeks.
cleaned her up today and thought I’d post some pics.
Today- rear Today - front all cleaned up. Rear interior Front interior
I bought them on amazon. They come in different colors which helps to match interior colors. Search for “Sisha sheepskin cover” on amazon. Had them in the car for a few months now and the wear is very minimal.
What is your opinion of the KYB/RSR combo? I recently switched over from the factory air ride to a set of coilovers. I was considering the KYB?RSR combo but was impatient and may be regretting it. No matter how I adjust them I am bouncing all over the place. Do the KYB's provide a similar ride to OEM? How does it do on undulations on the highway? Any sort of feedback would be greatly appreciated.
I considered coilovers for 2-3 months and in the end decided to go with a basic dropping springs and KYB struts for ride quality and longevity. This isn’t my first LS (actually my 6th) and I’ve been in the tuner world for over 2 decades owning several RX7’s of which I did dropping Springs and coilovers on as a well. I love the height adjustability on the coilovers hands down but the ride quality is too stiff for this application on the LS.
I really wanted practicality on this car with a drop. I wasn’t interested in excessive camber, wider fenders, fender rolling, cutting the rear fender well. I see too many posts with all this drama enough to stay far away. That looking cool hype is the reason why I still have a 95 RX7. I drive 10k miles annually in the LS and wanted it to ride comfortable and still maintain great curb appeal with the ease of maintenance. Like I still want to drive my LS through the car wash, I don’t want to be so low just to look cool and I can’t even take the car through a tunnel wash.
I actually like the ride performance on the RSR springs and KYB’s. It’s not stock spring and strut quality as it’s a little more stiff and it’s nowhere near what you would get from stock air ride. I’m also not on the stock 5 spoke 18 inch rims either. So even with the 19’s with 35 series tires, it’s still a great ride in my opinion. The only downfall on the RSR springs is the rears are not as high as the strut so they don’t need to be compressed which leaves a little play in the rear springs if the car is up in the air. There is not any bouncing as your describing. I’ve had 4 adults in the car and did 900 miles on the highway with this new setup and have not found anything to complain about. No weird bouncing or girating even after plowing through a couple potholes with 4 people in the car.
For my overall rating, with 1 being the worse and 10 being the best. I would rate this setup at 8.5.
And the tires did not need fixing...lol.. it’s the indentations in the asphalt from the cars parking in the same spot for years. I just finished washing the car and there was some puddles of water in the indentation which take like 1 day to dry up.
