Very unscientific, only remember what my cousin said, because I wanted to buy his then 9 y.o. M3 as he only wanted $4k. He refused to sell it to me said you don't want it, it needs major work. He said he tallied up all the costs for maintenance and repair and it was $24k. But remember, he doesn't DIY.

I bought a BMW 335i brand new in 12/06, still have it. If you added up all the maintenance (remember first 4 yrs. included under warranty), I've never paid the dealer more than $160, and that was for an alignment. I recently paid $149 for a coolant exchange--exchange, not drain/fill, as that is the BMW procedure. The ABS/DSC failed, and yes, that is $4,200 at the dealer, so it should be part of a normal look back. However, I DIY'd for under $500. Of course tires, brakes were all DIY but BMW gets $800/axle. Brake flush DIY. Oil DIY. Plugs DIY, all filters, etc. I doubt that my car has even reached $2k, going on 13 years. So a lot of the drama is removed when a person combines DIY and indie where they can supply the parts. Just remembered I decided I wanted a new battery so I paid the dealer $249 (some have paid $500), as there is a registration process--that is the single most expensive charge I have paid on the car. The dealer said why there is nothing wrong with your battery (I stupidly said omg 6 y.o. better replace--aunt had one in the car 10 years before replacing lol)

edit My LS430 needed over $6k in work from a multipoint, of which I did none. Japanese by the book is pretty expensive as well. Probably job for job more expensive, just that less breaks. Some of the Japanese part prices put the Germans to shame, double in some cases, and not even good quality.

Good read. But ya know it was an eye opener even if ya drive an Audi or a Toyota maintenance is 700 more a year for a fun car your engaged in. LS 460 versus A8 for example. Prius in retirement?

2 power steering pumps, wheel bearing in 300 k miles sub was cheap plugs a couple times, drain fills on all fluids every 50-75 k oil changes every 6-7k synthetic alignments filters tires brakes thats it on 2 04's. Absoutely amazing thats why I just really buy Tototas. Got a 014 VW its been good though.

I do not know how to fix my car thats why I get ones that do not break so I don't have to pony up for repairs. The average guy does not do service at OEM intervals religiously either

I can tell you right off the bat that article is a farce. $15,600, for a BMW 328i in 10 years. Sometimes, if your data isn't scientific, you have to hide the obvious if you expect anyone to believe you. Subaru Forester $12,200. What a joke, my friend had one and it had nothing but routine wear items in about 6 years. So from year 7-10 $12,200? lol c'mon people let's try to apply common sense

what was the sample size, 20-30?

edit I think that's the case--look at the most common occurrences, happening 28 times man what a joke. A common issue should show thousands upon thousands, not 28 Thank goodness "Your Mechanic" doesn't do drug clinical trials.

If I'm reading this right, its not showing 28 times this has happened but 28X "times more often" then the median average. Maybe the take away is not so much the cost, but the overall reliability and ranking of the cars in the study.

Sorry but I have to disagree. While I certainly can't attest to the veracity of the science of the linked 2016 study, you are throwing out a somewhat data-based survey based on your sample size of two cars. That's even worse common sense data science .

LOL good thing I am not running drug clinical trials. With all these crazy kids now who need our SAT scores just to get into a state university (I mean they are smart), I wonder when, or even if, the "Consumer Reports" mentality would fade away? Maybe it won't.
