LS430 clockspring change issues with "mounting" part being different
Hi all,
I wanted to get this thread started because I can't find too much information regarding the clockspring component (84306-50180) on my car
having a different sort of center attachment piece. I ended up replacing the center attachment piece by undoing the retaining tabs off of my
old part and putting it onto the new one so I could attach it.
The only issue I'm having now is the center piece ends up being off center so the turn signals are slightly messed up in terms of when turning
one way, the signal gets clicked off faster versus when I turn the other way (eg. right versus left turns). This doesn't seem that big a deal. The
horn and the buttons are working now for the most part.
The only other issue is when I first was taking apart the steering wheel and I removed the old clockspring, the airbag was still working (ie. no
airbag light). I had taken out the old and tried to put in the new when I realized the new one didn't fit due to the center part. I did transfer the
steering angle sensor (SAS) over from the old to the new as well at that point. I ended up not "recentering" the old clockspring when I put it
back and then when I drove off with the old faulty part, I totally damaged it in terms of the airbag light came on. Surprisingly a day later the
buttons all worked but the airbag light was turned off.
A few days later when I was driving the car, I turned it in one directions fully and I felt the clockspring again pull too hard in one directions
and the steering wheel buttons weren't working again.
So now that I have replaced the center part on the new clockspring and put the new part in, my only issue is the airbag light. I'm starting to
think the airbag light is telling me that the airbag really isn't connected and my conundrum now is whether the connection maybe open
elsewhere in the circuit, eg. wire in the steering wheel now, etc. I'm thinking of ordering another clockspring online (btw, these aren't OEM
clocksprings so aren't the $250-350 ones). And just putting that in to see if the clockspring I bought is just defective or else I have to try to
find a circuit diagram to test the connections/wires in the steering wheel to see if the problem is instead there.
Anyways, I thought I'd make this thread in hopes someone has some experience with this or maybe it'll help others who run into the same
issue. It's weird that the LS430 has different types of clockspring "mounts" to me. I just wish it was more standardized.
Cheers!

i had the same problem with the center of my new clock spring. i bought mine off ebay. it was super cheap, so i figured i would give it a shot. worst case i was out a little money & my time. but i had to swap the center part from my old clock spring also.
