Default Problem with Navigation System Responding

I have a 2004 LS430 that has been great. The problem is that the navigation screen works but the buttons on the side radio, climate, etc will sometimes work and other times won't function at all. I can't give a reason as to what will cause them to work or not work on a given day. Also the buttons the steering wheel will also at times act the same way. I have yet to pull everything apart. Has anyone ever had this problem. Is my nav system dying?

I haven't experienced this, but I would suggest either pulling the fuses for the audio/navigation system, or just disconnect the battery for 10 minutes or so and let the ECUs reset.

See what that does, and report back.

Was anything ever spilled on the dash that you know of? Perhaps something is making the buttons stick? You can pull the radio assembly out and spray the buttons down with electrical contact cleaner. It evaporates quickly and shouldn't harm the plastics.

That wouldn't answer why the steering wheel controls are not responding, however. Unless they are not responding due to a button sticking on the radio face?

Clean the steering wheel buttons as well, just to make sure.

Oh, and welcome to the club!

Cheers..

I’m inclined to believe that whatever the problem is, is not related to fuses. Fuses are either blown or not. If I had to guess I’d say it’s more likely a sticking button issue on either the steering wheel or the dash panel. Do none of the buttons work on your steering wheel when it’s acting up? Including your volume buttons on the back side of the wheel?
