Default Another...which tire to get post

Well, I hate to start another "which tire should I get" but tires change enough that I wanted to get a new take and it looks like I'm going to need tires sooner than latter. I did an oil change and started a tire rotation tonight but when I pulled one of the tires off they are just to a point that I need to replace them before I hydroplane. It's better to be safe than sorry. Currently I have Michelin Premier with about 47k miles. All in all I haven't had any issues with them other than they do make noise on some roads, enough that when talking on hands free I've had people ask "what's that noise". So, even though I know Michelin pretty top of the line I'm not 100% sold for the price.

What is everyone's current recommendations? I remember someone had posted about Yokohama's and have also hear good/bad about Perreli P7. A while back I remember a lot of people talking about a Continental tire as well.

I have Michelin Defenders on 3 of my vehicles. 90k mileage warranty and a quiet ride. They are cheaper than the Premiers.

These are rated pretty high on Tire Rack. Anyone used these?

Another vote for the Michelin Defender. I have 3500 miles on a set now, having purchased them to replace a set of Premiers that got about 48k miles.

My '04 came with a new set of Primacy MXV4s on it when I purchased in 2011. Of the 3 different Michelin tires, the Premier was the noisiest, and the Defender the quietest. Granted, my memory of the MXVs is fading. However, the Defender was immediately noticeable over the Premier. Much better ride on a higher mileage warranty tire.

Defender's OK just don't get the T rated tires cause they are cheaper(they where a T rated tire only for a while). Car is rated for a H does best with a V in my opinion.

I debated the tire brand for months before I decided to go with the Michelin. It's the first time I've ever bought this brand but the reviews for this car was the best. I actually ordered the Michelin Premier A/S but Discount ordered the Michelin Defender instead.
After a couple of thousand miles on the tires I am pleased. I also paid about $105/tire (17") after the rebates.

Do you remember which Defender you got? They have a Defender LTX ($171) and a Defender A/S ($131).

I'm kind of leaning towards the Yokohama YK740 ($153 + $70 rebate for 4) but I'm still on the fence with between the Yokohama and Michelin. I currently have Michelin Premier with can have some noise on certain roads.

The Defender LTX is a truck/SUV tire. The regular Defender is the only tire that got the Consumer Reports best buy. I think they are great with their high mileage warranty and low noise. No Korean/Chinese tire will come close. They are totally worth the little more money and Discount Tire and Costco frequently have coupons/rebates.

Check out the Advan Sport or the Avid Envigor - both are by Yokohama. I was in a jam last fall and had to buy new tires for my wife's Mercedes THAT DAY and Discount Tire put on a set of YK740's. They're just OK and better than the the tire with the huge blister on the sidewall, but they aren't the best.
I'm a big fan of the Yokohamas and run them on every single car in my garage. I even run their snow tires. My LS430 came with Michelins but when I refinish the wheels this spring the Michelins are getting replaced with Yokohamas probably the Advan Sports.

The 17" H rated Defender is what I have and they are great so far. Wet traction seems to be on par with the Premier, ride is better and much less road noise including over interstate expansion joints and older, worn asphalt.

Absolutely. Any tire shop worth its salt does not mount a tire that has a lower speed rating than what came from the factory. It's no longer 1970, where you can just buy two snow tires and mount them on the drive axle. Then again, of course, there are so many shops out there who are willing to sell whatever the customer wants, as long as they sign a disclaimer (like mounting non RFTs or not installing TPMS when they came from the factory)....my .02
