Default Lexus LS vs GS

As I’ve researched, the gs300 seemed to have more problems than the gs350 did. I’m set that a 2004-2006 LS430 will be in the mix to purchase, but there are not a lot of listings out there. The same is true with the 2007-2008 GS350. I was unable to hear about anything from the GS forum so I decided to bring this one here. I know that the LS is an all around tank and would be a great option, but I wanted to know anyone in here’s opinion on the GS. I know gas mileage is better, body style is a little more appealing, yet still pretty rare to see on the road, and of course the acceleration is better. The LS is known for its reliability but I have a couple GS listings near me with less than 130k miles for around $8-9250. Should I consider including the GS in my car hunt or stuck to finding the right LS listing to spring on?

I prefer the LS since the GS feels cramped to me. It boils down to your priorities. If you want the faster car, get the GS. If you want more luxury, get the LS.

what about the reliability? Speed isn’t the only thing that matters obviously.. definitely want the best all around vehicle at the end of the day

I believe the 430 motor is FAA approved for use in single engine airplanes. that is reliability

If you do decide to get an LS, I would get the 2005 or 2006. Best years from word of mouth of Lexus mechanics and parts guys.

I have 2nd Gen GS300 and LS but I've only had the GS for about 8 months. It's a high mileage car so it's had some basic mechanical issues but nothing major at all. I like the sportiness of the GS but I can tell you I wouldn't trade my LS for the GS by any means. So many more creature comfort features, ride, and space....they just don't compare IMO. Like others have said it's really all in your own preference but it's LS all the way for me.

Both cars are nice and pretty reliable for the most part. The GS rode just as smooth as my UL with air. The biggest problem for me is that I'm used to big cars and the GS just made me feel cramped like lsdude already stated.

at the end of the day space is not my biggest concern. I’m 19 and a college student on a football scholarship so I’m using the money I’ve made over the past few summers to go in on a Lexus. I don’t need to drive 4 people I’m my car very frequently and I like how both the LS and GS Have the power, luxury features and best of all the reliability. I nixed the Infiniti g35 and decided to stay the Lexus route. I just want to know if buying a gs350 is even worth considering as far as reliability. Most cars as they age will need repairs but if you think it’s best to just trust the LS and it’s reliability then that’s definitely something I will consider moving Forward.

These cars regardless of trim are going to have minor problems you are buying a 15 year old car just something to think about.

The GS would be 2007-2008, so that would be at least a few years newer. No car is bulletproof as I am well aware. Thank you for your input!

I own both the cars youre considering, an 05 LS with 155k and an 08 GS with 170k. You cant go wrong with either one, both are very reliable. Many testaments to that on the forums here for both. But if i had to choose, I’d go with the LS430 - its just a much better car overall and it is the lexus flagship.

The LS is much quieter, smoother, and drives like its on a pillow. It also has more a bit creature comforts. The GS is definitely a bit more modern looking especially compared to the old boxy lines of the LS. Its also a bit sportier and has more torque. The navigation screen is also much never compared to the very dated one in the LS.

The LS has a timing belt vs. the GS has the chain. A bit more easier to DIY the waterpump in the GS if you can turn a wrench. Lots of good info here on things to look for before buying either. If youre going with the GS, consider an 08+, they have the better looking updated front bumper and side mirrors with LED signals.

Good luck on your search

Do the gs it has a timing chain instead of a belt.

I had a gs350 it was pretty good on gas... did 120 going to la one time at night smooth.. the only problem I had with it was i had to get the evap light reset. Also they did have alot of recalls on engine parts that I'm pretty sure are voided now to fix. It's also a smaller car all around. The trunk space also. Have you tried looking into a 2006 gs430? Or a gs460. They are pretty hard to find but same engine as the ls430 and ls460. I also do agree with the sporty look. That' what drew me to but the gs in the 1st place

Don't willingly go into an 07 GS they have issues with carbon build up and a few others vs. Newer years. I had 2nd gen GS and at the time many who moved onto the 3rd gen GS ended up either coming back to a 2nd gen or upgrading to 04-06 LS truthfully. You can check the boards on that one it's true. If you are on a toss up between an 07-08 GS vs. An 04-06 LS you haven't driven them yet. Drive them both back to back
... your answer will be simple and somewhat confusing at first... get that LS430 if you want that care free bet my shiet gonna run smooth watch these vents oscillate vibe.
