Default High Mileage Oil Usage

My first LS was using a1/2 quart at the most at 200k 6500 to 7k miles with Valvoline syn. Current LS is at 1/8 of quart Pennzoil ultra at 9k miles usually change at 6500 to 7k miles but did alot of hwy miles. Just wondering how much U all are using? I bought em both at 60k miles from one woners.

Have 1999 LS400 wth 163,000 miles...very similar engine to LS430

I lose more oil to the dipstick wipe than engine oil consumption.

Mobil 1 0W-30 synthetic...

173,200 as of this morning, mostly freeway commute (73 miles each way) and I see little to no consumption. As Yoda said, more loss from pulling the dipstick...

As I approach 200K, it'll be interesting to see if there is any consumption.

There is now a high mileage Pennzoil synthetic I picked up at Wally World 5 quarts 22.00. Might be a gimmick but why not, but for an LS 175k might not be high mileage, lol. Toyota guys still charging me 11 bucks plus filter for a change.

Interesting, I am only at 99k, but the way you guys feel about approaching 200k, was the way I felt with my '98 Maxima, that it was not a big deal....these cars were simply built as they were and not really designed to simply fail at any particular point....the Nissan eventually developed leaks at the valve cover gaskets at 14-15 y.o., I did fix it and $450 wasn't the end of the world...(not sure how much for our cars). also switched to synthetic at 200k and didn't have any detrimental effects (I think the leaks/mineral spirit lack thereof is on even older cars)....also a blunder on my part, I replaced the radiator and had Dexcool in my garage and used it. Nothing ever happened with that either after 2 years, although I would not mix Dexcool with non, knowing what I know now....

Only just recently broke 100K on my 2006 LS. Zero oil consumption over 5k change intervals using full syn 5w-30.

Valve cover gaskets are probably 30 - 40 dollars and maybe 2 hours time. Very easy DIY.

I have to say, my car with 172,200 miles and 16 years old, drives as nice as any car half it's age. 20 years ago I would never have thought I could commute 150 miles a day in a 16 year old car with nearly 200K on the odometer.

It really boils down to how the car is maintained. I'm sure there are LS430's out there that are using oil at 100K miles, simply because the maintenance just hasn't been accomplished like it should be.

That's good news...seems like the 3UZ is quite accessible for the plugs and I take it VC gaskets....Nissan needed for the intake plenum to come off and many other electrical connections. I have a confession and this is very embarrassing.....I never even did the plugs myself on the Nissan!! One regret is I didn't have them replace the EGR since they said usually not needed [save $135 and now would face hundreds to fix it for emissions]

But I loved doing it on the BMW (inline 6 but plug 5 was tight access due to the factory strut tower bar). I remember doing it, Labor Day 2013, when I sold all my facebook stock (idiot)...

The high mileage oils aren't gimmicks. Mobil 1 offers it as well. These oils contain additives that cause the seals to swell slightly to compensate for the wear of high mileage. If you don't have oil seepage anywhere, crank seals and/or valve cover gaskets etc, there's really no need to use high mileage oils. If you choose to start using one stay with it going forward or the lack of those additives may cause the seals/gaskets to return to "normal" and potentially start leaking.
I'm not necessarily advocating high mileage oils but when I learned this it made sense to me...

I'm at 105K and it doesn't leak or use any oil at all. I run a 7500mile OCI (Mobil 1 5W-30) and have ever since it was out of warranty. I've always done my own oil changes so I know when and what oil was put in - always full synthetic. I have my fingers crossed that the valve covers don't start leaking! I feel certain the engine won't actually use oil for a very long time to com.

Mine is 04 with 180,000 + miles. Chang the oil at 6,500 with Mobil1 5w40. No oil consumption.
Some brands & grads have hire volitlity than others, so some will evaporate over time.
Hight milage oils have additives to swell the sales but also have higher viscosity as will.

My 02 started leaking/using oil at about 240k. Finally took it in and lower oil pan gasket needed replacing. Solved. Currently at 260k. I only use Mobile1 5W30.

I haven't actually measured it, but think I might be losing 1/2 qt per 5000 miles (OCI) on my 98 with 225k miles on it. Had a fresh timing belt and valve cover gaskets done at 205k and no signs of any oil leaks. Just that darn power steering leak I had to fix. I really don't even check it between the oil changes that I do myself. Been switching Pennzoil Ultra (when I can find it) and Mobil 1 synthetic. I'll try to pay more attention the next 6 months and see how it's faring. With a 20 year old car and over 225k miles I'm not expecting perfection. Car is still awesome and I enjoy the ride and the drive.
