Looking for thoughts from members who went from a 430 to a 460.
What are the things you miss about the 430 and like about the 460?
I actually like the lake of some features on my 01 430. Has anyone made the move and gone back to a 430?
Probably discussed 1,000 times, but thought it might make a good discussion.

Finally had enough. Enough being in the shop. Enough ticking like a freaking 80's Mercedes diesel. Enough of the road and wind noise. Hated, hated, hated that car. With a passion. Fortunately it was still under warranty so the repairs were covered, but still a pain in the ***.
Found me a silver 430 with 70K miles, and I'm happy again. Like going home and getting in your own bed after being in hotels for 2 weeks. I traded by old 430 in on the 460, and grew to regret it after a few months. The "new" 430 is the same model year (2004), but I found one that had Nav and ML, neither of which were in my old car. Even kept my old Vaistech MML and it works perfectly with the ML system. Could not be happier.
Lexus absolutely ruined the LS with the 460 redesign in 2007. They should punt and go back to what made them great to begin with. Almost as bad as what Bobby did to Whitney. Almost as bad as what Kiffin did to Southern Cal football. Nearly as bad as what Scrappy Doo did to Scooby Doo. A travesty. An unforgivable injustice.

Probably should ask this question on the 460 site, there's plenty of former 430 owners happily posting there everyday.
All I can say about mine is that I'm about to hit 160,000 miles and the car has been more reliable than any car I've ever owned (and that includes lots of Hondas). It still runs and drives pretty much like new. I think the true test will be when it reaches 200,000 plus, but I've run into a few people with more than that and they've had good results (talked to a guy with 365,000 on his, repairs were struts and control arms).

1. Looks. 460 is a beautiful design.
2. Upgraded entertainment with streaming.
Here's what I hated about my 2010 460L compared to any of the three 430s I have owned.
1. Noise. Just about every aspect when it came to sound. The 460 engine had a terrible ticking from the direct injection. You had to drown it out with the radio. Unfortunately, I listen to a lot of sports radio, and at stoplights and low speed, the ticking was very audible. Road noise and wind noise was also more pronounced. Numerous creaks and rattles that were not present in the 430.
2. Ride. The 460s ride is harsher than the 430s, especially with the larger wheels. It handled better, but you don't usually ask a fat girl to dance on her toes. Not the purpose of the car. Far better option that the 460 if that is your goal.
3. Build Quality. While the design of the 460s interior is updated, the leather felt thinner and cheaper. Fake silver trim pieces were starting to wear, and the damn glove compartment door never closed correctly. Inexcusable for a car in this price range. Only ~35K on the odometer if I remember correctly. About 3 years old.
4. Reliability. In the shop numerous times. One time for about a month. All warranty, but annoying. Only owned it 9 month I believe, and it was in the shop several times. Inexcusable.
I've asked Lexus techs at several different dealership their opinion of the 430 vs the 460, just to see if my experience was an outlier. Every single one said the 430 was easily the better car of the two. The 460 does not have a good reputation with the Lexus techs I spoke with.

Thanks Bob04. Great information. Your list is very similar to other feedback and information I've read.
I plan to stick with my 01 LS 430 for a long time.

My "buddy" the Lexus service advisor has repeatedly told me the LS430 was the best and most reliable Lexus ever made and warned me about LS460 struts and front suspension parts wearing out in the 60k mile range. Repair bills at Lexus for the front end work on LS460 required to correct some of these situations can run $4-5K. Just another reason to keep my LS430.

I was actually surprised because I had the car < 1 month, and I pulled into one of those modern dealerships whose drop-offs are completely inside. The valet made a big deal about a LS430. I said I haven't had it long, he goes is it a CPO? Oh wait a sec it can't be it's too old for that, anyway, I'm taking your car now. I said no problem. He goes no, I mean I'm keeping it. Oh.....again I was very surprised by the greeting and exchange, and he made that comment about the most desirable Lexus...also he said take care of it, it will take care of you....probably if someone has been around the dealer for a while the 430 has a good reputation I guess...

When I (occasionally) go to a Lex dealer for service, often get comments from SA's and tech's about how great the 430's are. My Lex certified indy drives an 01 Base and loves it ("these are great cars"). When I went to pick up my 04 last year (bought from an Infinity dealer) there was a group of sales and tech guys standing around admiring the car. LOL it's 13 years old and I have fun every time I drive.

You would have thought I was driving a Ferrari or something. Almost uncomfortably weird. Every service advisor there came over to check it out. They really flipped out when I told them the mileage. They did the service and said it was in excellent shape. Even tried to work a deal to buy it from me. Could have made some quick cash, but I wasn't interested.

They did the service and said it was in excellent shape. Even tried to work a deal to buy it from me. Could have made some quick cash, but I wasn't interested.
I remember an auction on eBay for a 1978 (or so) Ford F-150 with 300 miles. The man had purchased the truck, drove it home and drove it the first weekend. He was in an accident and disabled very soon after the purchase. The truck sat in his garage and was in showroom condition. I'm sure there was some work with rubber items and fluids, but pretty amazing. I watched the auction and the truck ended up going for around $20k.
It is fun to think of all the potential vehicles sitting out there in garages. Thanks for adding your tale.

The LS460s from like 2007 to 2012 are sort of sketchy. Control arm issues and melting plastic door panels. Plus they just sort of felt down market and cheap.
I will say though the last update from 2013+ , they are really nice cars. I think it's a "worthy" successor to the 430.
Probably not going to be as reliable and simple as the 430, but I honestly like the new LS better than my 430.

I work at a Lexus dealership and the LS430 is one of the most desireable cars that gets traded in along with the SC430 and LX470. The 2007-2012 LS460 is a good car but is viewed as being inferior to the LS430. The 2013+ LS is a fantastic car and I would love to own one. I have driven the new LS460 quite a bit and I like it more than the LS430 but not enough to drop big money on one.
The biggest downside to the newer LS460's compared to the LS430 or older LS460 is that it no longer has a touch screen. The remote touch interface is awful but the rest of the car is great.
