I just tried starting my car in S and D. I can't really tell the difference from either when driving as I normally do. When I start in D and accelerate faster I can see the car reach around 3500 rpm and shift at bout 35 mph. I think it starts in 1st gear under that condition. I suppose a better test would be start and do a maximum acceleration in both S and D. Then you might be able to detect any noticable difference. I don't have a nearby street to try that experiment.
did you just put it in S or did you use the shifter to put it in 1st and then manually shift as you accelerate?
I have the 6 speed. When I put it in S, It tells me I'm in 4th even at a dead stop. I don't think it would normally stay in 4th but obviously I manually shift down to 1st.
Accelerating in 1st on the 6 speed is completely different than Accelerating in Whatever D mode starts from.
It shows 5th when taken from D to S but that only indicates the highest gear the transmission will shift to automatically. It starts in 1st in either S or D. If you put it in S and downshift to 1st while stopped, you can hold the gear longer when accelerating normally. When pulling away from a stop, the LS tranny upshifts way early to 4th, lugs the motor then downshifts back to 3rd.

If you are saying that top gear in D is 5th, you are wrong. If I drive in D and accelerate to cruising on the highway. THEN slide it over to S it will downshift, you can see it on the Tach into 5th and I can then tap it back into 6th

But in D and cruising at 60 it is IN 6th gear
jim, he's right. Only 2004 - 2006 have a six speed transmission.
Not sure about everyone's car but my 06 LS really runs strong and hauls butt. LOL. I also have a mint low mileage 06 GS430 and my LS feels just as strong as the GS.
