Default Crunch

Insurance is looking at it, but adjuster said there is a good chance that this will be totaled, due to the age of the car and the price of parts and labor....

So, how was your Monday?

Thank you 2K, I am fine. Little sore, but fine. Very disappointed about my car. 63,000 miles.

Often times you can buy a car that is totaled out from your insurance company.

If it only has 63k miles and no major frame damage, it may make a lot of sense to buy and fix it yourself.

you're correct. I have to see what the final decision looks like. The Jeep that hit me had no damage other than a scuff.

No way that car with 63,000 miles should be totaled out. Repais should run less than $5000. Buy it if they total it out and have it repaired. The only downside would be that the title would reflect it being totaled. As long as you own the car that should not be a bother to you. Only to future owners.

The damage is the bumper cover, bumper supports, rear fender, both taillights, trunk is twisted, so they are replacing it, plus paint, labor, shop supplies, etc., they are at $6,600 on a car with a value of $11,00.

Glad you're ok, and that's good news, right? If they repair it, then you'll be better off since the miles are low and you can keep driving....

Glad to hear you didn't get hurt. I'm not surprised by the price. We all know what Lex parts cost. However, it should be impossible to tell that it's been repaired. The hood on my 04 has lots of chips. Respray quote was 1k by the "fancy car" body shop in town.

They are going to make their final decision once the damaged area is taken apart and they see what need to be replaced. The appraiser noticed that the left rear exhaust is also bent, and creased, so that need to be replaced as well.

I'm dropping it off today and the other party is supplying a rental car for 30 days, which is a pleasant surprise.

If they end up totalling the car, I will be removing the OZ wheels and put the factory wheels back on. If that is the case, I will offer then for sale to our group only, ( I hate Ebay), so if you have any interest, let me know. It's not a definite at this point, but if I can help someone out with a really nice set of 18x8 OZ, Ultraleggera wheels, with no marks on them, I would be glad to offer them here.

We will see. Oh, and I am going to beat the rental car like it owes me money....!

The repairs are underway and it seems that the rear frame behind the wheels was bent upwards and to the left(when standing behind the car). I am confident in the repair shop as I have a family connection to the facility, and I'm sure it will be done correctly. My concern is a car that has had frame damage and been repaired will show up on a Carfax report. Well, let me preface that by saying I have seen frame damage mentioned in Carfax reports on other vehicles.

This leaves me with a concern: If I decide to sell the car, which I am contemplating, how much would a notation on a Carfax report, of frame damage, affect the car's value?
I know that's a difficult question to quantify, but would it make you walk away from my car?
It would certainly make me walk away. Accidents happen, and they can't be undone, but now I have a car with a "story" and I think it has greatly impacted the resale value of the car. I would never try to hide an accident on a car I am trying to sell, because it's just the way I am, and I wouldn't want to deceive someone.

How would you feel if this was your car? Thoughts?

Thanks,

Rick

take some pictures of the damage for future buyers.tell the insurance company that you want diminished value for the frame damage.are you sure that frame damage will be on the carfax?Best of luck.
if this is a problem keeping it I would trade it in the moment you get it back before the repair gets on the carfax.
