currently using a Garmin 35:

Thinking of moving to a Rexing because it has both front and rear:

I like the Garmin well enough, but want something for the rear.

I have used the G1W on one of my cars. Cheap and effective and records in 1080p. It was about 40 bucks. You can also visit dashcamtalk.com for recommendations and to see what models are available.

I'm running the Rexing with the front and rear and I love it.

Well I just looked at my previous orders to get the model number and the dual camera isn't a Rexing. It looks similar but isn't. The two cams I am using (in two separate vehicles) are:
REXING S300
PowerLead Puda D003

I bought an inexpensive forward facing cam off eBay for 25 bucks. Deerect from China! It records in 1080i, which surprisingly looks pretty darn good, and I picked up a 10GB micro SD card to record. It has to stay plugged in, so it basically comes on when I start the car and shuts off when I kill the ignition. Works fine and the recordings come out really nicely. No good recordings yet, just goofy Illinois drivers weaving in and out of traffic at 90 MPH...

Watch any number of Russian or bad driver videos on You Tube. Those videos show any number of reasons for the practical use of these in car, truck, motorcycle, bicycle, etc.

They can help determine who's at fault God forbid your in an accident. I wish I had one installed when this lady t boned me. She said it was my fault when she clearly pulled into traffic because some idiot told her it was clear.

Don't be stupid. Dash cams can be used to defend yourself in an accident that is not your fault. What if a driver intentionally cuts you off, slams on his brakes, causing you to rear end his car? I wouldn't hesitate sending clip of a crazy driver to the police.

I have dash cams in two of my cars.

This is the one I ordered and use for my Lexus.

Dash cameras document interactions similar to cameras used at stores, restaurants, banks, ATM's... The prevention of false claims resulting in lawsuits or insurance payouts, innocence or to replay events in a particular issue are readily useful. Done deal on shoplifters, red light cameras, etc.

I have been watching this technology evolve over the past several years even dipping my toe in the water for a while with a unit I sent back.... (failed after a month).

Been keeping an eye on various units and looking for one that has decent mounting options but the challenges with running power from a cigarette lighter outlet or attempting to permanently wire one into either the LS430 or the SC are not attractive. The best mounting location for the front is next to the rear view mirror but getting power up there is not ideal (and having a wire dangle is not optimal).

As for why have one, the advantages are too obvious to start a debate. Video is the best truth maker. I have been expecting car makers to begin implementing built in units but without consumers demanding it they will not offer this feature on their own.

I hope others will share their experiences in both model selection and installation techniques for us to learn from and make educated choices...
