regular oil to synthetic
when you change over to synthetic, do you do it gradually, mixing the two or do you completely drain the regular oil and replace it with synthetic?

The seal issue only applies if you are already leaking oil on an old worn motor.

The biggest benefit of synthetic on the LS is for extended oil change intervals. I change my oil every 8 - 9k miles with Mobile 1 EP and an oversized filter. It takes longer to break down. Honestly, I could probably go to 12k intervals but I don't like to push the oil this long. I also run Mobile 1 EP in my WRX but can't go this long due to oil dilution. Nature of the engine. Great oil in my opinion. Pennzoil Ultra is also a highly rated oil but harder to find for a good price.

Supposedly, when Mobil 1 was first introduced to the market they really put a lot more detergents in their synthetic blends and this led to problems with leaking as it sort of blasted all the internal buildup around the seals. That's where the "don't switch from regular to synthetic" stories came from. It could be urban legend, but that's the story I've heard.
I think any car made in the last few decades can go with modern synthetics with zero issues. The only cars I would only use conventional oil would be something like a classic car when they used things like cork gaskets that may be on their way out.

A quote from the article linked. It is interesting info:
Like many myths, this one is based in fact. Early synthetics were made of esters, which were harder on seals, especially those made of neoprene. However, synthetic oils have come a long way since the early 1970s, and they're much nicer to delicate seals. But while synthetic oil won't create a leak, it will find one. Its streamlined molecular structure has no mercy for cracked or otherwise marginal seals.
