Some a*@hole hit my car while I was parked and left. Not a note, or anything left. People were actually in the parking lot but, apparently no one saw anything... Figures.
No common decency to even leave a note, or no one that was in the parking lot to even say anything. I was literally in the store for 5 mins getting a cup of coffee.
Sorry that happened to you. I think most people are decent and honest and they would have left a note and taken responsibility for the damage. However you were unlucky enough to run into a uncaring irresponsible d-bag. The only consolation I can afford you is that you can be 100% sure that whoever did this to your car is almost certainly living an absolutely miserable life - it is par for the course for folks that act in this manner.
I would file a comprehensive claim on my auto insurance. It is a non moving / non driving claim so it should have minimal impact of your insurance.
Sorry about your incident, but being the bumper, you can get it fixed without painting any metal body parts. I have been parking the same way for decades with all of my cars. Away from the majority of cars in a corner with only one side of my car facing the passenger side of any car parking next to me. I also park away from shopping carts. I don't mind walking any distance. As far as the AH that hit your car.......Karma

Paint and the sensor are both cracked
That sucks a lot. You probably have insurance, but there is usually some deductible involved. In Canada, it won't count as an at fault accident if it's a hit and run. Not sure what it's like where you are. Hopefully its the same.
I have had all sorts of issues like this. When I lived on the west coast, I had some little ***** kids push a mailbox over onto my pickup, which put a big dent in the quarter panel and damaged the paint. I also had numerous broken windows from crackheads looking for spare change. I never kept anything valuable inside and eventually left the doors unlocked, but that backfired big time as the truck was stolen off the street. Again I was out of pocket for someone else's stupidity.
Good luck with the repair - at least it is just cosmetic and I'm sure it will look like new in no time.

I park exactly the same way ... occasionally, someone sees I'm trying to avoid the parking lot dings, so they park very close next to one side even though there are numerous vacant parking spots around and closer to the stores. Today, there are folks who enjoy being AHs.

Although parking at a distance cannot avoid "psychos" it's still a good safeguard.
PS. For what it's worth, if at night and parking away from the other cars, I still look for ample lighting.
I feel for you, inconvenient though fixable. Karma happens to those people. Someone broke the tail light on the Celica in a similar way. Finding a clean tail light for a 1980 car is pretty challenging. Other incidents I've called across the US, Canada, Australia and Japan for parts.
