cant really comment on reliability of the LS since I never owned one but its always best to go with the latest model year available because chances are if there were any recalls or updates, the latest model vehicle would have it fixed out the factory
On the balance, the 2005/2006 LS430s are the highest quality. The 2004s have many of the same issues that the 2003s had. The 2001 and 2002s seem to have the most issues.
But I have a used 2001 that had a minimal service history (although I did get it at 70k miles and changed EVERYTHING right away) and it's been the most reliable car I've ever owned. In fact, I haven't had a single issue ever.
The fundamental car is solid - every one has the same engine, the 5 speed and 6 speed seem to last indefinitely if they have fresh fluid, the interior is made from good materials and it holds together well, they all use the same suspension parts. And given that the 2006s are about 10 years old now, a 2001 with fresh parts is probably a better car.
