Default 12 Volt Starting Battery Discussion

Looking for a new 12 Volt Starting Battery for my 2005 LS430. It's my daily driver and I live just South of Boston.

Any thoughts or comments on replacement batteries?
Price, capacity, group size, warranty, sealed or not?

There is always the Sears Platinum Die Hard but that's around $240 I think.

What comes stock in a new Lexus?

I've always replaced the stock unit with NAPA gold batteries after they kick the bucket.

My subaru had one for about 5 years and would hold a solid 12.6 volts even in the winter after sitting unstarted for a week.

Same for my civic.

So far no need to replace the OEM batter in my LS but when it dies I'll probably go with NAPA Gold again.

I purchased an Autocraft Gold from Advanced Auto Parts for my '06 last spring. If you purchase the battery online, you can usually find a 35% discount code/coupon online by googling. Choose "in store pickup." Once you arrive, a sales clerk will install the new battery for you free of charge.

I believe your car battery is Group 24F. Just make sure the CCA rating is at least the OEM rating, especially if it gets really cold in Boston. Most of my cars have Kirkland batteries from Costco, but I see they're replacing those with Interstate. Still good pricing though!

I picked up the Everstart Maxx 24F at Walmart for $104 before core. 3 year free replacement 5 year prorated. It's made by Johnson Controls.

Be aware that for old school wet cell lead acid battery, there are only a handful of manufactures left in North America due to environmental regulations/restrictions on the industry that tend to encourage consolidation. Most of the large manufacturers make the exact same battery for many private labels - Sam's, Autozone, Costco, Pep Boys, Sears, Advance Auto, etc. They are mostly selling the exact same battery internals produced on same factory line using different colored plastic case and brand label. For lead acid battery, best bet for the most part is to buy batteries by weight and size. Get the largest heaviest battery that will fit in your car. Look for a sturdy thick case and solidly mounted and supported posts. Flimsy plastic case or posts without solid support should be avoided. And buy a battery with a production label or sticker no more than 3 months old. Don't let them stick you with an old battery. Only buy a battery with a 3 year full replacement non-prorated warranty. Pro-rated extended warranties on batteries are a 100% con - careful reading of the extremely fine print on any pro-rated battery warranty will reveal that it isn't worth the paper it is printed on.

how to tell when battery is manufactured? could not tell on Wal-Mart battery in car when I bought it so I replaced after 3 years. new battery turns over car faster. date of install but I see no other date. also a question I have had for a while. Should I wait until mirrors fold out and steering wheel extends to engage starter? I usually just turn it on while all that crap is happening. got Interstate Megatron Plus for $155 installed

If your battery is good you can crank your engine as all small motors of those gadgets spinning. They do not consume much power at all.
