I suggest you do not spend time and money retrofitting the obsolete screen and out of date hardware dvd based application and laughably grainy graphics OEM factory nav into a 2001 LS430.
That's a bargain, if you got the whole instrument screen and trim.
If so, I think you should be able to just fit it in, in place of the ac/ control unit.
But again, you need harnesses that fit into it correctly, now I'm not sure if the 1st gen without nav, is nav ready, meaning you can gain control of your media, like the radio, cd changer and what not.
As for the GPS goes, you need lots of stuff, and placing the screen there wouldn't do you any good. As you will need the antenna and all it's wires. + you will need the GPS control unit in the trunk too.
Complementing what Jabberwock suggested, DON'T BOTHER! The OEM nav suck and is so outdated right now.
You're far off better getting an aftermarket nav system, like a Garmin that would hook up to your windshield. That is if you were after the screen in order to get GPS advantages.
If you just want the looking good factor. Try this aftermarket screen, looks good, and I have seen it many times on lots of LS's.
