drained battery - smart key messed up
I left my headlights on overnight and drained my battery. No problem, I jump started the car with help from a neighbour, drove it to a buddy and hooked it up to a battery charger.
Everything is OK except the car no longer recognizes my smart key.
I get a message on the dash " key is not detected "
If I insert the key fob into the ignition the car will start the car, but it's something I have never had to do.
The key fob buttons will lock and unlock the car, but when I walk to the trunk, it wont let me open it ?
Anyone know what I need to do to resolve this ?
Oh, I just checked the button under the dash, and its not turned off .....
Thanks

I just tried this remote keyless reset that was posted on CL a while ago ...
It didn't work either
close all doors lock, manually unlock and open drivers door
insert/remove key twice
close/open drivers door twice
insert/remove key once
close/open drivers door twice
insert key in ignition
close drivers door
turn ignition on/off
remove key
press lock/unlock at same time on key (2 sec)
press lock on key (1 sec)
All this trouble because I forgot to turn my lights out, once ? ?

Did you disconnect the battery cables while charging the battery? Always a smart move when charging the battery.
If not, I would disconnect the negative about 1 min. Do a soft reset of the ECM and do the procedure you did again.

well, me leaving my headlights on and running down the battery had nothing to do with the smart key quitting.
The smart key battery was too weak to open the locks automatically ( had to press the button - so much work ! ) and the smart key battery was too weak for the car to know it was present so it wouldn't start unless put the key fob into the ignition .
A new smart key battery fixed everything.
I learned how to shut off the smart key feature ( when I go away on vacation ) and also how to make the car beep quieter when I lock the car ... All is right with the car again.
