Default On vs. Auto headlight setting

I may be missing something simple but I cannot figure out the difference in functions between the "On" setting and the "Auto" setting other than the fact that "On" turns on the headlights without the ignition switched on. Is there any other difference? Either way the lights go off after the ignition is turned off and the door is opened, and they turn on the next time the ignition is turned on.

If left on auto the light come on when the sensor says its dark enough, when left in the on setting the lights are just always on when the car is on. If left in the parking lights position (where I keep mine at always unless it is night time) I know they turn off as soon as u open the car door after the car has been shut off, I believe its the same when in the on position. When left in the auto position and u turn ur car off and get out the lights stay on for like a min or so.

That would make sense. The owners manual does not mention this at all. I can't find any reference to the auto setting being associated with the light sensor. I'll test it out tomorrow when the sun is out. Thanks

My understanding of what happens on my car with the daytime running lights (DRLs) enabled:

Off: Front DRLs come on when ignition turned on. Headlights / taillights must be turned on after dark. Front DRLs turn off when ignition is turned off and door opened.

Parking lights: Front parking lights and taillights come on when ignition turned on. Headlights must be turned on after dark. Front parking lights and taillights turn off when ignition is turned off and door opened.

On: Headlights and taillights come on when ignition turned on. Front parking lights and taillights turn off when ignition is turned off and door opened.

Auto: DRLs come on during daylight when ignition is turned on. Headlights and taillights turn on when ignition is on and light sensor detects darkness (including inside the garage during the day). Headlights and taillights turn off when ignition is on and light sensor detects daylight. Any lit lights turn off when ignition is turned off and door opened.

Everything you want to know about the headlight switch is shown in the owners manual on pages 54 and 55. It even shows a view of where the sensor is located so you won't block it.
