Think I'll change the fluid out to Amsoil synthetic ATF. I don't ever recall changing it so it must be in bad shape after 118k miles.

I spoke to my mechanic this weekend. He mentioned that if I don't see bubbles in the reservoir when the car is cold, it is most likely not an O ring or air being sucked into the system problem. It is likely to continue for quite some time before needing replacement. My car steers fine and the noise is not all that loud when cold and almost non existent when warm. I will keep an eye out on it and will not be replacing any pump until there is a real issue.

Why does it look like Shrek is behind the wheel of your car? Is there something you're not telling us ancdmd?

1,500 miles ago, PS pump was slightly noisy when cold. Changed the fluid. Noise gone. Now, it's noticeable when cold and gets worse when hot. Turning the wheel in either direction definitely increases the noise. Car only has 109 but looks like it's new PS pump time.

Ok. Now the whine is constant. Cold or hot. It increases/decreases with engine speed. Is this a bad PS pump or something else? Accessories belt looks ok. TB was done at dealer's at 90k so replaced? Car has 109 and carefully maintained.

Tried coasting in neutral. No noise. Idle is slower (500 vs 700) and slightly rough so new air filter , MAF cleaning time. Normal temp. Battery seems to charge fine altho I haven't put a meter on it.

You have a leak somewhere. Possibly the high pressure line or the ps rack is leaking. Check your rubber hose to the reservoir.

When the PS first started getting noisy, I refilled w/ new "correct" Toyota fluid. Completely stopped the noise. Now it's back. Tx the recommend.

after my 90,000 mile service I replaced my power steering fluid, it was awful. my question is how often are we supposed to replace the power steering fluid? miles or time? I can find nothing in the owners manual and I have not seen it on any of the scheduled service intervals. I just had the 130,000 mile service performed so it has been 40,000 miles since I replaced it.

I personally would change it very 30,000 miles but that is just what I do and my opinion.
