Remove the under-seat tray by pulling and twisting a bit. It will pop out. Then get your hands in there and push the 2 clips on the left and right sides of the filter away from the middle, and then push down towards the floor. It comes out real easy. You may need a small but bright flashlight for doing this the first time.

On the 2002, there are little slide-out storage trays under both front seats. Perhaps they made these trays bigger sometime after 2002. Just pull the box/tray out completely and you'll be able to access the seat filters.

raise the seats as high as you can. It will still be hard to access. You'll probably have to go by feel.

The owners manual, pg 76, calls this the "side garnish filters" and shows a photo. They are only in the rear and are in the hard molding on the side next to the doors. You can pop them out with a flat screwdriver. Mine had very little dirt as they are not located down under the seats where dirt is stirred up every time someone gets in and out of the car.

I don't understand the manual's comment about not cleaning them by washing or air blowing. They are a porus rather open mesh and seem impervious to water.

The manual also shows location of the underseat filters with diagrams and how to remove those filters, pg 74-75.

What are these "side garnish filters" for ///

rear seat air conditioning ?
Or ...... is this for the air conditioner vent that comes from the dback of the front center console.

Sorry I am new with this car, and I find the manual not very clear.

Thanks

that would be my assumption... see owners manual pg76. it eludes to the rear climate control system (only avail on the UL). However, it just might be for models with perferated rear seats with climate control (heat and cold fans)

I pulled my underseat filters last week. The drivers side was very dirty and probably air-flow restricted but the passenger side was not too bad. I cleaned them both up and re-installed. Hoping to see the drivers side seat coolers work better but i couldn't really notice any significant difference.
