Most domestic cars used to list a fuel filter change as part of the 30K service. Then many moved to in-tank screens with no scheduled change. One tech told me that they did this because fuel filters can't handle the higher fuel pressures needed with modern injection systems. It's good to know that Lexus still has a filter, even though it's in the tank. I'll have mine changed, probably at the 90K service.
The guy that changed his own and slopped a gallon of gas on the garage floor was very lucky he didn't burn down his house. A local garage was dropping a tank and spilled a bit more fuel than that. The fumes found an ignition source. The resulting explosion blew two workers out the door (they lived) and the fire closed the shop for months.
I've swapped out fuel pumps before on my G35, and it is intimidating to be sitting INSIDE the car to see a pool of gasoline. One static shock and kaboom.
