Default Differntial Fluid

What Fluid do you guys normally run? OEM?

Anyone running with AmsOil SVG? it meets GL-5 standards and its supposed to be one of the best Diff Fluids out.

And to tipple check, 6speed Tranny is 13 Quarts complete flush right?

Mobil 1 Delvac 75w90 GL-5 in the diff. The spec on the tranny, IIRC, is 5.5 qts if you replace the torque converter. The pan itself is < 2 qts, I believe. The LX470's 5spd holds 12qts, so maybe that's what you're thinking about? More fluid=more $$$ when you replace it! There's an overflow bolt on the bottom of the pan, so just keep adding until it overflows. There is no drain bolt on the pan. You either have to do the transfusion by pulling the ATF cooler lines or drop the pan (the latter will only get you ~2qts).

Anyone have the torque spec for the drain & fill plugs? Not a fan of German torque spec.

I think they charged me more than that just to tell me not to change it yet.

2002 differential drain and filler plugs are 36ft-lb, top breather plug is 15ft-lb. Note that the gaskets on these plugs are marked as non-reusable parts.

Last edited by StanVanDam; Feb 3, 2011 at 10:16 AM. Reason: Updated typo, 36ft-lb instead of 39

Another quick question, there is no way to inspect the Diff fluid without draining it correct?

There was a description of the procedure by a Lexus tech on the forum somewhere, but it did not have pictures and seemed to be somewhat involved. But im sure it can be done.

This is the instructions that I have, but too afraid to do it, needs some pictures.

1. INSPECT AND ADJUST DIFFERENTIAL OIL
a. Stop the vehicle on a level place.
b. Using a hexagon wrench (10 mm), remove the rear differential filler plug and gasket.
c. Check that the oil surface is within 5 mm (0.20 in.) of the lowest position of the inner
surface of the differential filler plug opening.
d. Check for oil leakage when the oil level is low.
e. Using a hexagon wrench (10 mm), install the rear differential filler plug with a new gasket.
Torque: 49 N.m (500 kgf.cm, 36 ft.lbf)

2. ADD DIFFERENTIAL OIL
a. Using a hexagon wrench (10 mm), remove the rear differential filler plug and gasket.
b. Add oil.
Oil type: Differential synthetic gear oil GL-5 75W-90 or equivalent
Capacity: 1.35 +/- 0.05 liters (1.43 +/- 0.05 US qts, 1.19 +/- 0.04 lmp. qts)
c. Check the oil level.
d. Using a hexagon wrench (10 mm), install the rear differential filler plug with a new gasket.
Torque: 49 N.m (500 kgf.cm, 36 ft.lbf)

NOTE: Excessively large or small amounts of oil may cause
troubles.
After replacing oil, drive the vehicle and check the oil
level.
NOTE: After replacing the oil, recheck the oil level after initial driving.
